Samsung has again suggested that in the mobile devices space it arguably takes the lead when it comes to folding phones. Though its first set of Galaxy Fold which was introduced last year had a bit rocky start, that hasn’t deterred the tech giant from taking more devices into folding phones. Galaxy Z Fold 3 and Z Flip 3 were impressive devices from Samsung last year that delivered promises of how handy mobile devices which has a folding screen can be.
At the CES 2022 event, the company has shown off a bunch of prototypes foldable to come. The Flex S, and the Flex G are some of the foldable the tech giant recently showcased. The former is a multi-foldable device that can stretch all the way out to a triple-wide screen. While the Flex G, a pocket-sized device that folds inward to give some form of protection to the screen. There’s a device with a right rail that slides out to add some screen real estate.
Also, Samsung showed off a 17-inch laptop that folds, the Flex Note, well nothing like the Asus Zenbook which was also announced at CES 2022. The Flex Note panel is said to usher in the reign of new devices that have keyboard-less laptops with foldable displays. Also on showcase at the CES 2022 is the Flex Slidable panels aimed at smartphones. The Flex Slidable is mainly a horizontally slideable technology concept by Samsung OLED that provides users with the option to have a broader screen depending on the content on the phone. Samsung is however yet to reveal plans to turn these concept devices into retail products.
The South Korean company showcased its Flex Note panel, which for now can best be described as a concept for laptops with a single, continuous display that suggests a replacement for the physical keyboard. With this foldable device, users will be at an advantage as they would be able to take advantage of additional screen real estate while having access to touch keyboard options just like a smartphone screen. This device guarantees users of a screen size of a 13-inch laptop when folded and a 17-inch wide monitor-size screen when unfolded. This device provides a subtle feeling, especially when consuming media and other content.
Meanwhile, Samsung’s Flex S and Flex G concepts derive from the manner in which they unfold. Meaning that the Samsung Flex S folds as a result of three panels folding outward, into a larger screen. The Flex S panel offer a larger display with a compact form factor, two of the display panels are reported to be facing outward which could generally expose it to scratches and damage. This device when folded converts either into a smartphone, tablet, AI device depending on the necessity.
The Samsung Flex G concept is designed to mitigate this problem the former suggests — The Flex G also features three foldable panels just like the former, but instead folds inward not outward like the former does. Reports say the Flex G screen is more durable as the display guarantees some form of protection from any external impact or scratches as it folds inwards and is portable as it can be folded twice. Reports also say that these concepts of foldable devices aren’t entirely new as the tech giant had first revealed the concepts at Society for Information Display’s (SID) Display week in 2021. However, as mentioned earlier, Samsung is yet to reveal plans for turning all these foldable devices mentioned into retail products for the future. Excited about these devices, get more details here.
