It will excite you to know that ‘Me at the zoo‘ video was the first to be posted to YouTube twenty years ago today. Google has revealed that YouTube’s TV app experience will soon receive a significant update in honour of that milestone. And I’m really looking forward to that as someone who frequently views YouTube on a large screen.
On Wednesday, YouTube announced that it will be relaunching its TV app during the summer time. Better access to comments, channel information, and subscribing, as well as simpler playing, navigation, and quality adjustments, all on the books.
Though Google’s proposition on the “TV viewing upgrade” has not been made public. According to reports, it will happen “this summer”, that is, anywhere from June to September if you live in the southern hemisphere. However, a screenshot of what it will look like is seen here, along with some teasers for what’s to come.
Although the firm did not disclose any other information regarding the revamp, we have requested a preview of the design assets and will provide an update if YouTube responds.
A few additional new features for its apps were also revealed by the corporation. It is perceived it would look more with “easier navigation” which will be included, along with some “quality adjustments” and an enhanced playback experience. “Streamlined access to comments, channel info, and subscribing” will also be available. To put it another way, YouTube on your TV not to be mistaken with YouTube TV will start to resemble the fully functional browser experience.
Additionally, the business is soft-launching “Ask Music,” an AI-powered feature that can create a customized radio station based on what you describe of the music you wish to listen to. Currently, only English-speaking YouTube Premium and YouTube Music subscribers in a few countries can access this using the iOS and Android apps.
YouTube TV customers will be able to create their own multiview interface experience in addition to the enhanced TV experience. Previously only available to sports fans, this four-way grid will soon be accessible to non-sports material through a “small group of popular channels.” So, this multiview update might be just what you need if you haven’t been sufficiently distracted.
The multiview function, which allows users to watch up to four streams simultaneously, allows YouTube TV subscribers to personalize what they see. A few well-known non-sports channels will be available for users to customize their multiview feed, and more channels will be added in the upcoming months.
Up until now, users could only select from pre-chosen multiview screens that YouTube TV picked. Initially, multiview was only available for sports programming, but it eventually gained support for some non-sports content.
Additionally, YouTube Premium will enable 4x playback speed. Additionally, the firm announced that it would expand access to a tool that enables channel owners to use voice notes to respond to comments on their videos, which is beneficial for content creators.
Throughout the years viewing YouTube on TV, it’s always felt a little behind the entire experience. For instance, the Apple TV app only recently included a comments section. While this may seem like a mixed blessing, comments are a crucial component of the experience for the networks I watch.
The upcoming YouTube TV upgrade seems much more contemporary and in line with its mobile apps, although it seems to focus more on design than functionality. It seems to be simpler to subscribe from within videos, and there is a new button for adding the video to your playlists. Undoubtedly, there are further adjustments that aren’t visible in the single teaser image.
Naturally, YouTube reserves a large number of features for its Premium subscribers. A ‘4x playback speed’ option will be available on smartphones for Premium users (a subscription that costs $13.99 / £11.99 / AU$14.99 per month) as part of Google’s 20th birthday announcements today.
