“Jump ahead” was first tested by YouTube back in March, and as a Premium user, you may now access it on youtube.com/new
As a premium user, you’ll see a button that “jump[s] you to where most viewers typically skip ahead to” after double-tapping to advance. If you only wish to advance by 10 seconds, the pill-shaped “Jump ahead” button briefly shows in the bottom-right corner and then vanishes.
When you tap, a YouTube Premium-badged overlay labelled “Jumping over commonly skipped section” or “Premium controls” will appear. YouTube is using watch data and artificial intelligence to find the “next best point.”
A few weeks ago, YouTube initially teased this feature, calling it a “very small experiment” that certain users were automatically enrolled in. The youtube.com/new experiments page now makes it more broadly accessible, yet this one is limited to the mobile client: Settings > Test out the new, experimental features.
This is limited to English-language videos on the YouTube Android app in the United States. It’s “not available on every video,” and many views appear to be the defining characteristic. This experiment is available only to YouTube Premium members, and it ends on June 1st, though it might be extended later.
