As the week saw the formal launch of an API from Musk’s AI business xAI, which is just a little bit more of the AI zeitgeist, was added by Elon Musk. The AI startup xAI, founded by Elon Musk, has expanded its API to include picture generating capabilities which provides the Grok chatbot integrated into X (previously Twitter). This makes Grok’s services available for a pittance of $5 per million input tokens or $15 per million output tokens, according to TechCrunch.
The competition for dominance in generative models is intensifying, and the AI environment is changing. xAI, Musk’s AI startup, is venturing into the visual realm of AI. By including picture production in its API, it has advanced. This most recent advancement presents a chance to go beyond its text-based models and enter the market for AI-generated content.
Currently, the API only offers one model, “grok-2-image-1212.” When given a caption, the model may produce up to 10 JPG-formatted photos every request (up to 5 queries per second), with each image costing $0.07.
In contrast, Black Forest Labs, an AI business that xAI collaborated with last year to introduce picture production on Musk’s social network X, costs about $0.05 per image. Ideogram, another well-known supplier of picture models, has a higher price point of $0.08.
According to its documentation, xAI states that prompts in requests may be modified by a “chat model” and that the API does not yet permit changing the size, style, or quality of pictures.
Launching its API in October 2024, xAI seems to be searching for significant income streams as it increases training and development of flagship models such as Grok 3. A $10 billion investment round that may increase the company’s worth to $75 billion is allegedly the subject of meetings with investors.
A recent acquisition of a generative AI video firm and ongoing expansion of the Memphis-based data center where xAI trains and runs its numerous models are clues to the company’s future plans.
The purpose of the launch is to develop and market xAI’s AI services. Since significant expenditures are being made in AI infrastructure and training, it appears that adding picture production creates an additional revenue stream. The firm launched its API in October 2024. During a live-streamed talk at a technology conference in Dubai, Musk mentioned that Grok 3, the next major Grok version, is expected to be launched in the coming weeks. According to reports, xAI may be in talks with investors for a $10 billion fundraising round, potentially increasing its worth to over $75 billion.
They have alluded to more extensive multimedia extensions beyond image production. In addition to expanding its Memphis data center, which is essential for training and operating all of its AI models, the business also purchased a generative AI startup that specializes in video.
With xAI’s recent foray into the field of AI-generated photos, it must contend with other prominent competitors. Even if this business adds more features to strengthen and enhance its products, its success is probably going to represent a sea change in the pricing strategy, advancements in the generative model, and eventual acceptance in the broader AI industry. The newest release from xAI states that it intends to be a significant player in the ongoing battle for generative AI perception. It’s unclear if Musk’s AI business will be able to establish a long-term position, but it’s obvious that it’s taking risks to stay on the cutting edge.
