Just read the comments below from Eric Schmidt and you may ask “who would have thought”? The comments were made in Berlin at a
“Many people think our main competition is Bing or Yahoo. But, really, our biggest search competitor is Amazon,”
“People don’t think of Amazon as search, but if you are looking for something to buy, you are more often than not looking for it on Amazon,” he said.
“They are obviously more focused on the commerce side of the equation, but, at their roots, they are answering users’ questions and searches, just as we are.”
I know Amazon enjoys a lot of traffic online due to its size but I’ll like to point out that they enjoy this basically in commerce which is a fraction of what people ususally search for online and oh some people eventually get routed to Amazon via Google search. Amazon obviously is a big player and has sought to increase its presence on the internet by launching various smart devices and buying start ups like Twitch (a live-streaming gaming netowrk) in August for $970m/159,205,874,532.64 Naira. Analysts still believe that Google still controls nearly 90% of online searches everyday.
The statements were made apparently to play down talks of Gooogle enjoying a monopoly in the search business. Well again, who would have thought?
