WhatsApp is bringing a new “Chat Lock” feature that will make it simpler to keep chats more private. The alerts from the new closed chats are designed not to show the sender or the substance of the messages because they will be stored in a password- or biometrics-protected folder. It sounds like Chat Lock will function similarly to Apple’s iCloud hidden photographs feature.
In a video released by Meta, users can have a feel of the “Chat Lock” feature.
Even though WhatsApp is well recognized for its end-to-end encryption, that won’t block anyone who already has an unlocked phone open to WhatsApp from still being able to potentially see a message. If you frequently have to share your unlocked phone with someone, Chat Lock adds an extra degree of security that can be handy. (If you’d want, WhatsApp can also be completely locked behind biometric authentication.)
WhatsApp is now rolling out Chat Lock updates, and there will be more to come in the future. According to a blog post by Meta, “Over the coming months, we’re going to be adding more options for Chat Lock, including locking for companion devices and creating a custom password for your chats so that you can use a different password from your phone’s.”
