WhatsApp introduced a new feature in 2023 that let users send films and images in high definition within its messaging service. However, HD multi-media material will consume the storage space on the receiver’s phone.
To solve the aforementioned problem, a new functionality is being tested by a Meta-owned company. According to WABetaInfo, a Whatsapp community forum, the most recent version of WhatsApp for Android beta, v2.25.12.24, offers the ability to select the quality level for downloaded images and videos.
According to WhatsApp, it is developing a feature that would let users choose the quality of automatically downloaded media. A feature tracker revealed that the messaging app is working on a new function that will determine whether HD or normal quality photos and videos are downloaded. While users can choose to always share HD resolution photographs by turning on a specific feature, the messaging platform currently lets users choose the media quality when uploading a photo or video.
A new ‘Auto-download quality’ function was found by feature tracker WABetaInfo in the WhatsApp beta for Android 2.25.12.24 version, which was just made available to beta testers. Testers are unable to use the functionality because it is still in the development stage. But a preview of the feature’s functionality is provided by a screenshot.
WhatsApp provides two auto-download options: SD (Standard) and HD (High Definition), as shown in the screenshot below. HD is an option for those who have enough room on their phone. Additionally, the SD option is available to individuals with a lot of storage capacity.
Users should be able to locate the function by going to the WhatsApp settings menu and selecting Storage and data > Auto-download quality when it is finally made available to beta testers. You can select between Standard and HD quality via a pop-up menu.
According to the feature’s brief explanation, users can lessen the volume of device storage taken up by media received on WhatsApp by instructing WhatsApp to download received photographs in standard or high definition resolution. Additionally, it might assist consumers in avoiding overuse of mobile data.
We can learn more about the new auto-download quality feature’s operation from the feature tracker. WhatsApp creates two versions of the same media (HD and normal quality) and uploads them to the server since it employs end-to-end encryption.
The server provides the relevant file for download based on the recipient’s auto-download quality level. As long as the image is still accessible on the server, users may also be given the choice to see an image in high definition.
There is no indication as to when this feature will be made available to beta testers; it is still in the development stage. Since WhatsApp usually provides feature parity across all platforms, it is also anticipated to emerge on the iOS version of the service. Prior to being made available to all individuals on the stable channel, it is anticipated to debut on the beta channel.
Indian WhatsApp users will gain immensely from this. Every day, the majority of relatives and even friends send good morning as well as good night messages, which accumulate in the gallery and use up most of the phone’s storage.
In the subcontinent, where there are over 50 crore active WhatsApp users, this truly gets out of hand around holidays, New Year’s Day, and birthdays. In India, over 20–25 billion texts are sent or received on New Year’s Day.
People will be able to save a significant amount of phone storage space with this new capability.
Relatedly, WhatsApp introduced a number of new features last week, such as an online indicator in group chat. Next to the group name, it displays the number of persons who are ‘Online’ in real time. Users will be able to tag them in chats directly as a result.
