The 2025 MyBroadband Award for Best Fibre Network Operator has gone to VUMA.
After conducting a thorough analysis of the performance of the top fiber network operators (FNOs) in South Africa, it was awarded this prize.
More than 25,000 speed tests performed using the MyBroadband Speed Test app have to be analysed for this.
MyBroadband produced an overall score for each major FNO in South Africa based on this data, which includes user voting, latency scores, jitter scores, upload speeds, and download speeds.
VUMA is the worthy recipient of this honour because it got the greatest overall score among all FNOs.
And in advancing the sector, VUMA victory has overseen South Africa’s fibre Internet expansion for the last ten years, their triumph is not surprising.
In 2014, it began its landmark Parkhurst project, demonstrating that FTTH rollout in South Africa was financially viable provided a neighbourhood demonstrated enough interest.
This led to the creation of a FTTH “land-grab,” in which leading FNOs fought to establish fibre network infrastructure in new neighbourhoods.
As the largest FNO in South Africa, VUMA has once again taken the lead in this area.
MyBroadband stated in January 2025 that VUMA had roughly a million FTTH clients, which is nearly as many home Internet users as Telkom had during the height of the DSL Internet era.
This is especially noteworthy because, in the DSL market, Telkom was essentially unchallenged, yet VUMA has grown its clientele despite fierce competition.
Over 2 million households are covered by VUMA’s network overall, compared to roughly 1.3 million residences and 650,000 households connected by its closest rival.
The future has great promise as VUMA informed MyBroadband that it anticipates FTTH demand to rise over time in 2025.
This is due to the fact that more customers are using digital services and needing greater bandwidth.
According to VUMA, it would concurrently seek to increase the coverage of its network and boost connection speeds on its current infrastructure.
In recent years, it has also given lower-income neighbourhoods and informal settlements a lot of attention.
This includes the September 2024 introduction of Vuma Key, the most affordable 10Mbps FTTH offering in South Africa.
Whereas the Vuma Reach product targets homes making between R5,000 (approximately 276.52 USD) and R30,000 (approximately 1659.14 USD) per month, Vuma Key targets households with a combined monthly income of less than R5,000 (approximately 276.52 USD).
