Virgin Galactic, the pioneering space tourism company, has announced that after years of testing, it will finally initiate commercial spaceflight services at the end of June. Following the successful launch of their scientific research missions, Virgin Galactic will move to monthly flights to accommodate the backlog of flights.
Galactic 01, which has been scheduled to launch between the 27th and 30th of June, will mark the beginning of the scientific research missions rather than catering solely to those who are in the market for relaxation spots or merely for the experience. Members from the Italian Air Force and the National Research Council of Italy will venture to the edge of space to conduct microgravity research. Onboard experiments will also demonstrate the immense potential for future research endeavours.
Galactic 02, on the other hand, will be the first private astronaut flight, marking a significant milestone in Virgin Galactic’s commercial spaceflight journey. While the passengers for this flight have yet to be announced, it is expected to comprise of a mix of celebrities, affluent individuals, influencers, and possibly even a charitable spot reserved for a selected student.
After this pivotal mission, Virgin Galactic plans to increase the frequency of their flights to a monthly cadence. Their goal and ultimate aim, it would seem, would be to increase the frequency to meet the growing demand and reduce both scarcity and cost of travel. While the experience may not be considered affordable for everyone, there is a possibility that in the coming years, individuals will have the choice between a Virgin Galactic flight and a three-week tropical vacation. For many, the former option holds great appeal.
Over the years, Virgin Galactic has dedicated extensive efforts to perfecting their launch method, where the spacecraft is released from a custom carrier jet at high altitude. Despite facing a few setbacks and experiencing delays beyond initial expectations, the company’s perseverance is finally yielding positive outcomes.
As the launch dates draw near, more information about these missions, including the participating individuals and their objectives, will be unveiled, leaving the world eagerly awaiting these exciting developments in space tourism.
