Chip less RFID is a radio frequency identification (RFID) that uses conductive polymers or plastics as a replacement for silicon microchips. It is a wireless technology that offers a wide array of benefits including automatic identification, access control, security and surveillance, tracking, logistics, database management, inventory control and others.
These classic chip less RFIDs are designed through complex data encoding and transmission and can offer greater physical performance, longer range and ability than traditional barcodes. Chip less RFIDs are completely printable and are resistant to climate conditions. It can usually be operated up to a range of 10 meters in average and 256 bits of data. These are electronically interrogated to reveal ID and other data. Chip less RFIDs are cheaper than traditional RFIDs as they do not contain microchips and do not require any maintenance.
There are several types of RFID technologies that no more contain a microchip and work on a different principle. Few versions of RFID can be completely printed. Some large enterprises provide RFIDs with both chip and chip less technology in order to cope up with a full range of customer needs.
There are different types of RFID technology that can help in solving real world business problems. By choosing the right kind of chip less RFID for the required application, one can ensure complete benefits of the technology.
Types based on frequency:-
- Low Frequency RFID: This kind of RFIDs operate in the range of 30 KHz to 300 KHz with a data read rate within 10 cm. Though they have a shorter range and slower data read rate than other technologies, they can actually perform better in the existence of metals or liquids. Short read range is acceptable in access control and livestock tracking.
- High Frequency RFID: HF RFIDs have a frequency range of 3 MHz to 30 MHz with a data read rate of 10 cm to 1 m. These are mostly used in electronic ticketing, payment and data transfer. Near Field Communication (NFC) technology uses high frequency RFIDs.
- Ultra-High Frequency RFID: These systems can operate in the range of 300 MHz to 3 GHz with a data read rate up to 12 m. These are super sensitive when interfered by metals, liquids and electromagnetic signals.
Types based on communication:-
- Active RFID: These are generally used to track large data and are comparatively expensive than passive counterparts. These consists of a sensor that can measure and transmit climate changes for the objects they are attached to. Transponders and beacons are two kinds of active RFID.
- Passive RFID: Unlike Active RFID, they send a signal to the tag. That signal is then used to power up the tag and to reflect energy back to the reader. These are smaller and more flexible than active RFIDs.
- Battery Assisted Passive RFID: BAP systems or semi passive RFIDs do not have transmitters and integrate a power source into passive configuration. This process improves read distance and data transfer rates.
COVID-19 impact on the global chip less RFID market:-
Unfortunately, the outbreak of the COVID-19 pandemic has led to the implementation of global lockdown, which gave way to temporary closure of many industries across the world. Especially during the initial period of the lockdown, the overall production process of chip less RFIDs got adversely affected and the supply chain was completely disrupted. This in turn, has caused huge loss to the market. Mainly, the Asian and European countries have faced challenges in manufacturing the product and supplying finished products to some extent. Nevertheless, the market is recovering now and growing slowly & steadily.
Current market scenario of global chip less RFID market:
According to a report published by Allied Market Research, the global chip less RFID market size is projected to reach $4.7 billion with a considerable CAGR from 2020-2027. Certain factors like better accuracy, lower manufacturing cost, and giving more functions as compared to other alternatives is driving the growth of the chip less RFID market.
Owing to numerous benefits, several industries such as healthcare and banking are highly adopting chip less RFID tags to track products. Rise in usage of chip less RFIDs in baking cards, e-passports and others are boosting the demand of it to a great extent. Moreover, innovation of cloud-based system is anticipated to create lucrative opportunities to the global chip less RFID market in the near future.
