Twitter has recently undergone a significant rebranding by officially changing its iconic bird logo to an ‘X.’ The decision was announced by Elon Musk, who tweeted about the change over the weekend. The new logo has already been implemented on the website, and x.com now redirects to twitter.com.
Musk referred to the ‘X’ logo as an “interim” one, suggesting that there may be further logo changes in the future. In fact, Musk hinted that Twitter might bid farewell to its current brand and eventually eliminate all bird-related imagery.

Notably, Musk’s fascination with the letter ‘X’ is well-documented. He previously founded X.com, which later evolved into the well-known payment platform PayPal. His space exploration company, SpaceX, prominently features the letter ‘X’ in its logo. Additionally, Musk founded an AI company called X.ai. In April, Twitter’s legal name was changed from Twitter Inc. to X Corp after Musk’s takeover.
The vision for the new ‘X’ logo and Twitter’s future is grand, with Musk envisioning it as a platform for unlimited interactivity, centred around audio, video, messaging, and even payment and banking services. Powered by AI, this new ‘X’ iteration of Twitter aims to connect people globally and serve as a marketplace for ideas, goods, services, and opportunities.
This rebranding move by Twitter is not the first time Musk has toyed with the social network’s logo. Earlier this year, he briefly changed it to the Doge meme. Additionally, Musk has consistently spoken about turning Twitter into an all-encompassing app, referred to as “X, the everything app.”
Twitter’s bird logo, known as “Larry the bird,” was officially adopted in 2010 and named after the legendary Boston Celtics basketball player, Larry Bird.
This branding change comes in the context of Twitter’s financial challenges, as Musk acknowledged that the company is facing negative cash flow due to a significant drop in advertising revenue and a heavy debt load.
While the new ‘X’ logo represents a departure from Twitter’s iconic bird emblem, it signifies a bold step towards Musk’s vision of transforming the platform into an all-encompassing global hub for various forms of communication, commerce, and interaction. As the social media landscape continues to evolve, Twitter’s rebranding aims to position it for a future of endless possibilities and connections.
