Toshiba’s $99 Excite Go hopes to win the budget Android tablet war

Toshiba has had a fairly hit-or-miss relationship with budget tablets, with devices like the Toshiba Excite 7 failing to inspire much in the way of, well, excitement. But maybe a bargain-bin price tag will be enough to get the new Toshiba Excite Go flying off of shelves. Announced Tuesday, the Excite Go runs Android 4.4 KitKat and has an MSRP of $109.99, but can be yours in early July for as little as $99.

Such a low price tag from a reputable (or at least recognizable) manufacturer remains nigh on unheard of. The HP 7 Plus is one exception, but that 7-inch device runs Android 4.2 Jelly Bean on a 1GHz A31 Allwinner (Who? Exactly.) processor, and offers 8GB of storage, with a microSD slot with support for 32GB SD cards.

The Excite Go seems positively generous by those standards. The tablet‘s 7-inch display offers a 1024-by-600 pixel resolution, and is powered by a quad-core Intel Atom processor. The tablet offers up to 16GB of internal storage, but its microSD slot can support up to 128GB SDXC cards. Toshiba also claims the Excite Go’s battery is good for up to 8 hours of use, though that’ll dip to 6 and half hours if you’re watching video. It also weighs just 12.5 ounces — barely over half a pound.

Whether or not the Excite Go will be worth a hundred bucks will remain up for debate until the device is available in July. But at first blush, you could certainly do worse.
