A new feature on Instagram’s microblogging site, Threads, which tries to compete with X (previously Twitter), allows users to check whether other people are online. Meta’s other social networking programs, like Facebook, Instagram, and WhatsApp, already have similar features, and Threads is the newest to get them. The activity status of other users will only be visible to those who have enabled this functionality, just like it is on other applications.
In order to let you know who is currently online while you navigate through your feed, Meta is introducing a “activity status” to Threads. Threads CEO Adam Mosseri promotes the platform as a “means to assist you in locating people to interact with in real-time” in a post. According to screenshots Mosseri supplied, the activity status will appear on your profile and in the feed next to your profile photo. He announced the feature’s launch on the microblogging site in a post on Threads. It was launched as a “way to find others to engage with” in real-time, according to the official. It was proposed that by letting users know when other people are online, the activity indicator feature may facilitate communication.
Thankfully, you don’t have to disclose it if you don’t want people to know when you’re online. “You can disable this in your settings at any time, and only those who have activity status enabled will be able to see when you’re online,” Mosseri explains.
Users may view other people’s online statuses because the functionality is enabled by default on Threads. Additionally, according to Threads, it is not connected to Instagram’s current activity status display. Disabling it on Instagram won’t affect Threads, and vice versa. These features function independently of one another.
When enabled, the user’s profile image will have a green dot next to it to indicate that they are online. To activate it:
- Navigate to the Threads profile section.
- From the top-right corner of the screen, pick the hamburger icon.
- Select the Online Status tab and then Privacy.
- Select one of the following options: Followers, everyone, and those you follow back, and nobody
User Control:
- The option to turn off the active status function is available to users.
- Only authorised followers will be able to see the status of private accounts.
Its objective is to promote greater in-the-moment communication and engagement between users.
The feature can be turned off by following the aforementioned steps and selecting the last option. A source confirmed that they were able to verify its availability on Threads for iOS. Right now, other sources confirmed that they can’t figure out how to activate the functionality. It may be a user mistake, but I’m betting it just hasn’t pushed out to me yet. They will probably keep it off even if they do obtain it.
Although this feature may have been included by Threads to help users, there were several suggestions for further features in the comments area of Mosseri’s post. The ability to send direct messages (DMs) to other users, a chronological feed, and real-time breaking events were some of the most desired features.
With this improvement, Threads is more in line with Twitter’s, now X, real-time interaction strategy. Unlike Threads, which currently refrains from posting political information. This will also strike a compromise between user privacy and greater real-time interaction, which might lead to more lively discussions on the site.
The present trend of Meta moving away from political and news postings might change. Changes after the election may result in Threads promoting more general debate subjects.
