MTN Group needs relevance in the African telecom landscape, especially in significant marketplaces like Nigeria where the telecom giant has met with its regulators to sort its dues and procure another business license as well. The Nigerian Communication Commission, NCC, has reportedly signed MTN Nigeria, MTNN, into another fifteen-year 2100MHz spectrum deal that has been effective since the previous business year.

MTNN’s ambition has strategically schemed its in-house adventures in exploring the continental telecom landscape for emerging technology. The telecom giant ambitious strategy issued N58.66 billion to the NCC, seeking a commissioned license to renew its 2100MHz spectrum which denotes that the telecom giant 3G network broadband will continue to service the local market.

MTNN 2100MHz spectrum license had expired and was on the verge of extinction by the telecom regulator, yet the telecom giant paid generous commission to keep its third-generation internet broadband connection active. MTNN CEO, Karl Toriola said the 2100MHz spectrum is a 15-year contract the NCC approved to serve Nigerians through 2037 which started counting down last year, while the counterpart telecom giant would have ditched 3G network broadband.

“This is a significant milestone in delivering our Ambition 2025 strategy. The access to NTEL’S 90OMHz and 1800MHz spectrums broadens our spectrum holdings and improves our 3G and 4G user experience as coverage and capacity will be enhanced by utilizing these spectrums,” MTNN CEO said.

Toriola’s comments affirmed the telecom giant didn’t just renew its 3G spectrum license, the NCC also approved a business transaction between MTNN and Natcom Development and Investment Limited, NTEL. The NTEL and MTNN business contract is commissioned spectrum lease approved to serve the market for years per the contract positioning of NTEL’s broadband utility.

According to the information disclosed by Toriola and seen by Techbooky Africa, the NTEL spectrum deal assigned by the NCC strategize MTNN’s gateway to meet up with the telecom giant ambitious goals. The telecom regulator permitted MTNN to lease two spectrums from NTEL such as 5HMz Frequency Division Duplex and 10HMz FDD.

NTEL is a prominent mobile data service provider that has kept the local telecom landscape interested to compete with its brand on telecom innovation. NTEL’s competence has MTNN seeking to lease two spectrums – especially the 10HMz FDD which covers 19 states in the country. The corporate filing between the two telecom service providers got MTNN to pay N4.25 billion to access NTEL telecom service.

However, MTN Group is keen on penetrating the Nigerian market as a foreign telecom company which clarifies why the telecom giant has to consort the local regulator before commencing telecommunication services to evade regulatory scolds. MTNN’s ambition has rejuvenated its third-generation internet broadband when technological innovations have the African populace surfing on the fifth-generation internet broadband.

Since the 5G technology inception, several telecom service providers such as T-Mobile, AT&T, and others have reportedly ditched the 3G network to embrace the telecom innovation powered by super fast 5G internet connection to alter expansion. MTNN has its 3G network renewed despite debuting its brand of fifth-generation internet broadband connection in 2023.

All business indulgence is accounted as expansion whereby the telecom giant is ambitious enough to renew the 3G network and consent to lease NTEL’s broadband spectrum.
