The COVID-19 pandemic changed the world from what we know it to be, affecting every business and individual in every country worldwide.

One of the many sectors that have witnessed a dramatic change due to work patterns is Cloud. Since everyone was forced to change their work culture from the office setting to remote work, Cloud has benefitted massively from this change.

According to reports, in the first quarter of 2020 alone, Cloud spends experienced a 37% increase to $29 billion. In addition, other services such as Google Cloud, Microsoft Azure, and Amazon Web Service also experienced unprecedented demand at the early part of the pandemic.

The remote work culture that most organizations resulted in was the catalyst for this massive shift to cloud-based solutions and platforms. During this period, many C-suite leaders were also forced to fast-track their plans to migrate to the Cloud. This large-scale migration to cloud platforms became a necessity for the business to survive. For business enterprises to succeed now, they have to accelerate their digital transformation and embrace Cloud.

Although many organizations saw the Cloud as their lifeline during the pandemic, now they need to prepare and plan for continuity events going into the future. This means that organizations will rely more on platform service providers and cloud infrastructure, and the removal of humans and physical data centres from the supply chains will be fast-tracked.

Cloud Modernization

The massive surge of companies migrating to the Cloud is bound to continue for the next few years as the business world continues to navigate its way through the post-pandemic world. A report by Gartner forecasts that pubic cloud services will increase by 18.4% in 2021. So, we are likely to see the emergence of a new business value category from the Cloud, as everyone focuses on business continuity.

Many organizations agree that they need to reset their business continuity at a large, unprecedented scale and are starting cloud modernization projects to ensure that they can continue to function appropriately if a similar crisis happens in the future.

Boardroom IT

According to thesis writing services, many organizations now understand the importance and power of technology, with Covid-19 being the catalyst to elevate decision-makers in tech. In the last few years, we have become increasingly dependent and heavily reliant on technology. It has kept humans connected and businesses functioning. However, IT teams are only starting to take the front seat in discussion with leadership teams and board executives to prioritize the decisions on strategy and investments in technology with first-hand proof of the importance of IT to the survival and future of the company.

Covid-19, alongside many other things, has had a tremendous impact on the role of the CIO. Many of them believe that the working relationship with enterprise leaders has improved due to the pandemic. Everyone is starting to see IT as a crucial department that enables the business to keep running. As a result, more than fifty percent of CIOs have more influence in their company and now take part in boardroom discussions.

This is a critical change in the decision-making process that will likely lead to an increase in companies investing in modernization to transform themselves into a more adaptable organization based on modern cloud technology. So it is going to be a new era of transformation for businesses.

Everyone seems to have learned from 2020 that it’s impossible to predict the future. However, it is pretty easy to predict the current growth of the cloud sector with the recent happenings. Many organizations have realized the importance and actual value of cloud technology, which will only continue beyond 2021.

Although many organizations had it as part of their plans to move to the Cloud, with most organizations previously citing three years to five years before they ultimately make a move to the Cloud, however, things have changed clearly. No one could have prepared us for what 2020 had in stock, which has caused many organizations to fully embrace the modernization of their environment and adapt based on modern cloud technology. So, the move to the Cloud has come much faster than many organizations envisaged pre-COVID. It was fast-tracked by COVID, but it has become the central core for many organizations as they look to ensure business continuity.

When you look at organizations that have modernized their environments, you will realize that it is not often the most intelligent or strongest that survives. Instead, it is mostly the species that can adapt the most.

Conclusion

Some organizations still need to do more when it comes to embracing change. These are some small areas in business like a collaboration that determines if everyone has the same purpose, direction, focusing on the same outcomes, etc. Many business organizations have to start treating IT as an integral part of the business, which it is, for their excellent. They need to treat it as a business partner and stop treating it like a utility. It is only then that these organizations will start to experience successful transformation. From now on, businesses need to have a transformational approach that is IT-inclusive, and they must not shadow IT.

The pandemic has proven the importance of IT in a business organization. The move to Cloud is proof that many organizations got the memo as they look to ensure business continuity in case of a future occurrence.
