The Nigerian communication commission (NCC) digital inclusion memo has reportedly been approved by the Federal Executive Council to endorse free internet broadband connection across twenty selected airports in Nigeria. The NCC noted that the development will be available across six selected geographical areas within the country where major airports are located.

The Minister of Communications and Digital Economy, Prof. Isa Pantami confirmed the development of digital inclusion dedicated to serving the selected airport with free internet facilities. ”A contract was awarded for the provision of broadband in some selected airports. 20 of them are going to be covered in the first phase of the project.”

Pantami’s confirmation unveiled that the NCC has drafted prior memos before this current initiative which depends on the FEC’s permission to progress with the free internet broadband installation across local airports. The Nigerian minister revealed the airports in selected regions to receive the free broadband installation.

“You have three airports in each geo-political zone. In the South-West, you have two in Lagos State, one in Ondo State; South-East, Imo, Anambra, and Enugu States will benefit; Rivers and Akwa-Ibom States for South-South.” Pantami’s enlisting the selected inland airports’ localization.

“North Central has the Federal Capital Territory and Kwara State; Kano, Sokoto, and Kebbi States will benefit from the North-West, while Borno, Adamawa, and Gombe States will benefit from the North-East Region,” Pantami’s comment reads,

This report replicates the prior digital inclusion memos the NCC drafted for the FEC to approve the provision of free internet broadband connection across forty-three higher institutions in Nigeria. A similar memo has crossed the FEC’s desk for approval of the free internet broadband installation in six selected SME hubs in the country.

Meanwhile, the approval of the installation of free internet connection across twenty selected airports across the country is the outcome of the council meetup the digital minister of Nigeria had with the outgoing president, Mohammadu Buhari. The outgoing president of Nigeria’s presence impacted the approval of the NCC’s memo by the Federal Executive Council to commence as soon as possible.
