T-rays Can Be Used To Speed Up Computer Memory Up To 1,000 Times

Computers speeds have been improving over the years as the number of components that can be packed into a single machine continue to increase as they get smaller because of the investment that has gone into research over the years.

The last time we talked about terahertz radiation was with respect to the discovery by MIT researchers that an entire book can be read without opening the book.

Today though, it looks like terahertz radiation can be used to speed up computer memory 1,000 times better than current speeds. In an Engadget report which was originally published in Nature journal, European and Russian scientists say they have discovered a way of using T-rays (terahertz radiation) to speed up the rate of the cell-resetting process by a factor of 1000, which could be used to create ultrafast memory.

While this is still in the early stages, the researchers were able to show that terahertz radiation’s effect was ten times greater than a traditional external magnetic field, meaning the new method is both far faster and more efficient.

Terahertz radiation falls in between infrared radiation and microwave radiation in the electromagnetic spectrum, and it shares some properties with each of these. Like infrared and microwave radiation, terahertz radiation travels in a line of sight and is non-ionizing. Other applications of T-rays includes security at public facilities like airport.
