Susan Wojcicki, the Chief Executive Officer (CEO) of online video sharing and social media platform, YouTube has stepped down from her position.
Susan who joined the San Bruno, California based company as its 1th employee in 1999, leaves the YouTube leadership after nine years as CEO.
In a statement of Thursday, the outgone YouTube CEO said she would be starting a “new chapter focused on my family, health, and personal projects I’m passionate about.”
“Today, after nearly 25 years here, I’ve decided to step back from my role as the head of YouTube and start a new chapter focused on my family, health, and personal projects I’m passionate about, part of her statement read in part.
Continuing she said:
“The time is right for me, and I feel able to do this because we have an incredible leadership team in place at YouTube. When I joined YouTube nine years ago, one of my first priorities was bringing in an incredible leadership team.
Susan Wojcicki in the statement revealed that the YouTube current head of product will replace her as CEO, noting that she is the perfect fit for the position.
“Neal Mohan was one of those leaders, and he’ll be the SVP and new head of YouTube. I’ve spent nearly 15 years of my career working with Neal, first when he came over to Google with the DoubleClick acquisition in 2007 and as his role grew to become SVP of Display and Video Ads. He became YouTube’s Chief Product Officer in 2015.
“Since then, he has set up a top-notch product and UX team, played pivotal roles in the launch of some of our biggest products, including YouTube TV, YouTube Music and Premium and Shorts, and has led our Trust and Safety team, ensuring that YouTube lives up to its responsibility as a global platform. He has a wonderful sense for our product, our business, our creator and user communities, and our employees. Neal will be a terrific leader for YouTube”
Founded in February 14, 2005, by Steve Chen, Chad Hurley, and Jawed Karim, YouTube is owned by Google, and prides itself as the second most visited website, after Google Search. The platform currently has more than 2.5 billion monthly users.
Susan Wojcicki with her 20-year stint in the technology industry, was actively involved in the creation of Google in 1998 when Steve, Chad and Jawed first set up an office in the garage of her home.
She was the company’s first marketing manager in 1999, later leading YouTube online advertising business and original video service.
She was the person that suggested the purchase of YouTube by Google in 2006 in a $1.65 billion deal.
