With the introduction of AI playlists, Spotify, one of the first music streaming services to adopt generative AI, is now advancing the technology. Spotify’s AI playlist function, which is still in testing, enables premium customers to create a personalized playlist through text prompts.
The feature is restricted to certain markets, such as the UK and Australia, but it will soon be extended to more regions. It is accessible to both Android and iOS users.
Users of Spotify Premium can now utilize text queries or keywords such as “beats to fight a zombie apocalypse” or “songs to serenade my cat.” To receive music recommendations, they can also input names of fictional characters, colours, emojis, and more. Spotify will suggest music that fits the artist, genre, mood, or all of the above based on these inputs.
Spotify understands user intent by using inputs from a generative AI model (LLM) to recommend music based on the mood and taste of the user. Recently, the company unveiled a new AI-powered DJ that provides personalized music curation along with spoken word commentary.
The majority of Spotify’s AI-powered features are currently exclusive to premium subscribers, and the company may be considering increasing the $1 monthly fee to $2 in some markets, according to a new report from Spotify. In addition, the website is tightening up its free tier, which makes it necessary for more users to purchase a premium membership to enjoy Spotify to the fullest.
