Many tech CEOs have participated in the ALS Ice Bucket Challenge, but the Samsung Galaxy S5 appears to be the first tech product to jump onboard.
It’s an intelligent marketing emphasis, given that the S5 is waterproof — unlike numerous competitors in the smartphone market. To underscore this feature, the Galaxy S5 took up the challenge against the iPhone 5s, the HTC One M8, and Nokia Lumia 930.
After being doused with ice water, a computerized voice announces, “Gosh, that’s freezing.” For clarity’s sake, the ALS Ice Bucket Challenge is a global phenomenon where individuals around the world pour buckets of ice water on themselves to raise funds and awareness for ALS, also known as Lou Gehrig’s Disease.
Importantly, Samsung’s waterproof feature isn’t exclusive to their product line. Sony offers several waterproof models in its Xperia line, and Kyocera has a focus on durable, water-resistant phones.
Despite the cleverness of the stunt, Samsung is drawing criticism by potentially using a charitable cause as a marketing gimmick.
