Samsung Unveils New Mid-range Devices With Expanded Batteries

At Samsung’s Awesome Galaxy A event has come and gone and a range of powerful midrange phones was delivered by the company.  The Samsung Galaxy A53 and Samsung Galaxy A33 made their debut at the online event in advance for a launch scheduled for next month. Although features of the Samsung Galaxy A33 leaked hours before the event but that didn’t stop the company from giving its virtual audience all the awesomeness promised.

Just about everything on the phone is similar to the previous model, starting of course with 5G. The new 5G devices offer more than just speedier downloads. Comes with the same 6.5-inch OLED 120Hz panel, IP67 water resistance, a stabilized 64-megapixel main camera with a 12-megapixel ultra-wide, and 25W fast wired charging (there’s still no wireless charging). These were all really good specs for a midrange phone last year, and they continue to stand out in 2022’s model.

The new Samsung A53 5G now boasts of the most notable hardware change to Samsung’s new Exynos 1280 5nm processor. The version of the A52 5G sold earlier in the US came off with a Qualcomm processor. Usage of a house-brand chip has proven a shift in strategy to accommodate lower price points. Or could also be a result of the whole chip shortage situation that has been around for a while now. The new device is paired with 6GB of RAM, a healthy amount of memory for a midrange phone.

Although the battery performance was good for the previous A52 model the new A53 5G device presents an improvement to that, with a 5,000mAh capacity instead of the 4,500mAh of the previous model. Samsung claims the A53 when powered on a single charge can last about 2 full days.

The Galaxy A33 5G comes with looks almost identical to the A53 5G counterpart, however slight differences still exists. Comes with a slightly smaller 6.5-inch OLED with a top refresh rate of 90Hz. Also, camera sensors are different, with a lower-res 48-megapixel main camera, though it still includes image stabilization. Otherwise, specs are largely the same, including its IP67 rating and 5,000mAh battery. A difference spotted comes with the processor, Samsung’s new A33 5G device features the Exynos 1380 processor.

There’s also one more improvement to these models that you won’t find on either spec sheet. For certain devices, Samsung has promised four years of OS updates and five years of security updates — the A53 5G and A33 5G will be included. That’s among the best support policies for Android flagship phones and certainly one of the best you’ll find for a midrange phone. It’s just short of Apple’s track record of supporting six- or seven-year-old phones with new software versions, but for a lot of people, those five years might be just enough.

The Galaxy A53 will sell for $449/€449/£399 starting April 1 and will be available in the U.S, while the Galaxy A33 debuts on April 22, priced at €369/£329; well the lack of U.S. pricing suggests the A33 may not be coming to the U.S, at least not initially.
