Twitter, in its strategy to move towards becoming a platform for commerce, has been working closely with payments company Stripe, affirming the long-awaited integration that allows users to make purchases directly from a tweet, as suggested by a number of industry insiders.
Twitter plans to unveil features late this year permitting ‘Buy’ options or its equivalents within tweets. By clicking on these buttons, consumers are able to input their payment and, potentially, shipping information, all within the Twitter interface. Businesses interested in selling their products or services through Twitter are being guided to collaborate with Stripe for processing payments. Although Stripe is currently the only known payment partner for Twitter’s burgeoning e-commerce initiative, the permanence of this exclusive partnership isn’t guaranteed.
Both Twitter and Stripe declined to comment when asked.
A previously reported rumour about Twitter and Stripe joining forces, dating back to January of that year, had not been confirmed at the time. However, sources have confirmed its finalization since.
This partnership marks yet another achievement for Stripe, the venture-supported business led by young brothers Patrick and John Collison. In June, the company unveiled its alliance with China’s leading digital payments service Alipay, providing Western businesses with an additional payment option for their customers. Known for the simplicity of its set up process, Stripe offers software that enables businesses to accept a variety of payments on their websites and within apps.
Twitter has long-contemplated incorporating shopping functionality into their platform, gaining serious momentum with the hiring of ex-Ticketmaster CEO Nathan Hubbard to head the initiative. As reported back in June, ‘Buy Now’ buttons had begun appearing in some tweets, with an official launch expected in time for the annual holiday season of that year.
