Many may have already seen this coming, seen that global streaming Netflix is in the race to feature gaming content on its billion-dollar entertainment mega streaming platform. After teasing with an announcement earlier in the year, many users have been expectant. The day is finally here, users can now actually play games from the Netflix app. This move is said to be a great way the streaming platform is offering expanded services to subscribers.
In a tweet from the company, Netflix announces, “its early days, but we’re excited to start bringing you exclusive games, with no ads, no additional fees, and no in-app purchases.” Netflix Game will start rolling out on the mobile app first on Android while iOS is on the way. The streaming platform announces that users will now have the ability to choose one from five games. These games include Stranger Things: 1984, Stranger Things 3: The Game, Shooting Hoops, Card Blast, and Teeter Up.
Users are advised to go ahead to download the Netflix games from the Google Play store, however, to access Netflix games users will require a valid Netflix subscription. The games will begin to roll out games on the app starting November 3rd. On the mobile device, Netflix Games will appear in its own dedicated row as well as have a dedicated tab. The Android app on phones will have a dedicated games row and games tab where users can pick a game to download, while tablets will have the dedicated games row or be able to select games from the categories drop-down menu.
Though the games currently available are a bit sparse, Netflix has acquired Oxenfree developer Night School, which would be responsible for more ambitious titles than the ones currently available. For a while now, the streaming platform has been busy developing and testing its mobile games feature. A trial run commenced in August, trials were carried out in Poland, Spain, and Italy. It’s November already and the streaming platform is ready to share the idea of enhancing its mobile experience.
Netflix announces that games will automatically default to the language preference preset in the Netflix profile. For users who can’t access their particular language for the game yet will automatically default to English. The company also announces that games will be unavailable on kids’ profiles. Also, games will vary in availability, some games may require an internet connection while others may be downloaded and available for play offline.
Netflix’s expansion into gaming has represented the company’s most meaningful move into a new kind of entertainment since it started streaming in 2007, and since it released its first original show in 2012. Exciting additions Netflix have recently announced include the mobile-only plans for various countries in Africa, the play something feature for Android users, and the spatial audio for iOS users. Netflix is truly one of the global brands that care so much about its customers.
