Mobile Telecommunications Network (MTN) has announced the roll-out of two new MyMTN Home uncapped speed-based plans on the 5G network, with the plan set to increase data speeds, increased liability, and low latency, in a bid to enhance better coverage in South Africa.

The implication of this is that MTN will deploy the 5G technology across 125 coverage areas in South Africa, with the home 5G contract plans available for new and subscribers who wish to upgrade to the 5G network. It also announced that customers who subscribe to any of the uncapped 5G plans before March 31st next year will be rewarded with a $550 worth 5G router.

The two new uncapped 5G packages are listed below:

50Mbps — R999 per month, 24-month contract (1,000GB fair use policy)

100Mbps — R1099 per month, 24-month contract (2,000GB fair use policy)

According to the telecom giant, “MTN has developed the 5G MyMTN Home Uncapped plans using the latest 5G network technologies to provide unlimited data connectivity to customers’ homes in 125 coverage areas, in all provinces.”

Rain offers a 50 Mbps “Standard Unlimited Home 5G” plan for R699 / month, while it’s “Premium Unlimited Home 5G” plan, which has no speed restrictions, costs R999 / month.

According to a report by ‘Africa Analysis’, a South Africa based consultancy firm, 5G subscribers in South Africa are projected to reach 11 million by 2025, with population coverage of 43 percent, signifying the growth from the estimated 90,000 5G subscribers and 4.4 percent population coverage at the end of 2020.

Another highlight of the offer is that customers who take up any of the uncapped 5G plans will qualify to receive a free 5G router to the value of $551, with the offer expiring 31st March, 2022.

“With the growth in demand for flexible data solutions and the need for customers to stay connected to loved ones during these uncertain times, while also working and playing from home, MyMTN Home Uncapped plans are ideal,” Megan Nicholas, General Manager Residential Segment at MTN South Africa said.

Our 5G plan allows our customers to live largely and enjoy an abundance of data, on a high-speed premium wireless connection that is expected from Mzansi’s Bozza network”, she added.

MTN, a pure-play emerging markets mobile telecommunications operator at the forefront of technological and digital changes on the African continent is gradually cementing its place at the top of Africa telcos.
