The U.S. Central command’s Twitter and YouTube accounts were compromised in a security breach yesterday. ISIS (the Islamic state militants) in the middle east have since claimed responsibility for this. The US CENTCOM has this to tell Gizmodo as of yesterday; We can confirm that the CENTCOM Twitter and YouTube accounts were compromised earlier today. We are taking appropriate measures to address the matter. We have no further information to provide at this time.
Just minutes after the breach, the US military suspended both accounts. The military says no classified documents were lost in the breach. Its important to note that a hack into social media accounts of the CENTCOM is not the same as hacking into the military server which could have had catastrophic outcomes. You’ll recall that the US led coalition using the CENTCOM declared a war on ISIS as part of moves to decimate the group which has strong holds in Iraq and the war torn Syria.
