Google launched the Accelerated Mobile Pages (AMP) today with an aim to increase its mobile web traffic. Nearly half of traffic to sites like Facebook and Twitter is now done on mobile. This ordinarily means more people spend time on Facebook and other platforms than the world wide web.

Google aims to change this by partnering with companies like Twitter, Adobe, WordPress, LinkedIn among other content providers to help them create web content that downloads 85 times faster to mobile devices than usual. “The project relies on AMP HTML, a new open framework built entirely out of existing web technologies, which allows websites to build light-weight web pages” said David Besbris, Vice President Engineering, Search at Google. You may have heard of Instant Articles from Facebook where Facebook partners with publishers to have their contents deliver faster to readers on its site. In the coming days, Google aims to partner with more content providers to achieve this.

As part of the new push by internet giants to promote the mobile space, both Google search and Microsoft’s Bing have decided to down rank sites that are not mobile friendly.
