Elon Musk, CEO of Space X and Tesla
Events of the last weekend make us believe that Elon Musk may be thinking about “unleashing” his own social media platform. While a Saturday tweet, failed to provide information as to what the platform may look like, be about or even work, it suggested that the billionaire is seriously thinking about building a social media platform.
Like Donald Trump, who recently launched Truth Social after being kicked out of basically social media for posting what was considered insensitive content, Elon Musk thinks that microblogging platform Twitter does not give room for free speech.
“Given that Twitter serves as the de facto public town square, failing to adhere to free speech principles fundamentally undermines democracy. What should be done?” the Tesla and SpaceX boss tweeted on Friday and followed up the tweet by asking his fans if a new platform that would rather be truly democratic is needed.
In another tweet that came on Friday, Elon Musk said that “free speech is essential to a functioning democracy” questioning Twitter’s stand on Democracy.
Given how influential Elon Musk is, this may be bad business for Twitter. Elon is the richest man on earth, has 79.4 million followers on Twitter and is one of the most controversial celebrities ever.
Elon Musk’s tweets, for months now, have been under regulators’ watch. And he obviously does not like that. In February, the billionaire accused the SEC of “harassment”, that the SEC was trying to infringe on his right to free speech.
If Elon Musk decides to launch his own social media platform, he’d be following in the footsteps of former American President Donald Trump who decided to launch Truth Social after his squabble with various social media platforms.
Who knows what Elon Musk may call his platform. Musk Social? Or something cryptocurrency inspired?
