Earlier at the unleashed event, Apple introduces the M1 Pro and M1 Max chips. These chips have been identified to be the most powerful chip the tech giant has ever produced. With a little less than a year that the M1 chip was introduced. The new M1 Pro and M1 Max chips are here to dazzle users with even more agile capabilities. The new M1 Pro and M1 Max chips also made a phenomenal part of Apple’s new MacBook Pro additions. The new range of chips featured particularly in Apple’s revamped MacBook Air, 13-inch MacBook Pro, and the entry-level Mac Mini, in addition to the 2021 iMac and iPad Pro.
According to reports, as good as the M1 chip was programmed to be, it was only a solution for replacing Intel on Apple’s entry-to-mid level hardware, with its high-end MacBook Pro, iMac, and Mac Mini models (meant for developers, programmers, graphic designers, and other more demanding workloads) all notably still sticking with Intel’s chips for the last year.
With the addition of the new M1 Pro and M1 Max both built on the same 5nm process, Apple assures of its incredible performance. Both are Apple’s long-awaited answer to few issues those with demanding workload experiences on the M1 chip.
Apple has promised up to 70 percent better CPU performance for the M1 Pro, and even twice as much graphics performance compared to the abilities of M1. Although the basic architecture is quite the same, Apple assured that the M1 Pro hardware comes with an incredible 10-core CPU, a configuration that offers eight performance cores and two efficiency cores, along with a 16-core GPU with 2,048 execution units.
The new chip addition also supports extra RAM, with configuration options up to 32GB (although, like the M1, memory is still integrated directly into the chip itself, instead of user-upgradable) with 200GB/s memory bandwidth. Generally, the M1 Pro has 33.7 billion transistors, roughly twice as much the number of transistors that the M1 boasts of.
Apple didn’t just stop at the M1 Pro, the M1 Max also showed up with even much more power. The M1 Max also boasts the same 10-core CPU configuration, with eight performance cores and two efficiency cores. Something exciting about the M1 Max is that it doubles the memory bandwidth (to 400GB/s), RAM (up to 64GB of memory), and GPU (with 32 cores, 4,096 execution units, and four times the GPU performance of last year’s M1). Generally, M1 Max has 57 billion transistors, this number definitely announces it as the largest chip from Apple. The new M1 Max chip will also make connecting up to four external displays to a single device possible.
For the sake of comparison, last year’s M1 chip offered a classic Arm mix of about 8 CPU cores: four performance cores for more demanding tasks and four high-efficiency cores for extending battery life. Depending on the computer model the original M1 also offered either a seven-core or eight-core GPU with a RAM of either 8GB or 16GB of RAM. Apple has promised that the addition of the new chips would offer up to 1.7 times better CPU performance per watt compared to the regular M1.
