OpenAI is introducing ChatGPT to WhatsApp for the first time, and it’s absolutely free to use. The new feature will allow you to communicate with it in the same way as you would with a human or Meta’s AI, which is integrated into the messaging platform.
This new feature ChatGPT on WhatsApp also may now accept questions over WhatsApp after OpenAI expanded the availability of their highly popular AI chatbot.
This is the tenth announcement in the 12 Days of OpenAI extravaganza, in which the firm promised that some days, such as Sora, would be major, while others will include “stocking stuffers.”
Today’s release enables users to add 1-800-CHATGPT (1-800-242-8478) as a WhatsApp contact from anywhere in the world. This allows consumers to interact with AI even if they have a low-data mobile connection.
Let us not forget that WhatsApp is one of the world’s most popular messaging programs, with over 2.7 billion users globally to chat with the AI tool which is projected to reach 3 billion by next year. It is a vital platform for OpenAI to get access to, particularly given the growing popularity of MetaAI.
It is part of OpenAI’s strategy to increase access to artificial intelligence, and the company hopes to attract additional users to ChatGPT.
WhatsApp Users in the United States can call ChatGPT and speak with the AI. This employs the same technology as the Realtime API.
In some regions of the world, persistent access to high-speed internet is expensive or nearly unattainable, so people use apps like WhatsApp to access data services that do not require a constant connection.
ChatGPT on WhatsApp allows users to ask questions as if they were talking to a human, but without the ChatGPT app’s online overheads.
Antonia Woodford, the Product Manager at OpenAI claims that “they care a lot about continuing to reduce barriers for more people to try out AI and see what it can do for them.” and “they are really excited that we’re bringing ChatGPT to you through two familiar channels: calling and WhatsApp.”
The phone service is presently only available to users in the United States, with anyone dialling from a US number receiving 15 minutes of free calls per month.
The ChatGPT chatbot on WhatsApp does not require users to log in to an OpenAI account, however it only allows text discussions and has a knowledge cut-off date of September 2021.
It is also not possible to connect ChatGPT to WhatsApp group chats, and OpenAI has cautioned that any illegal use that breaches its terms of service would result in users being blocked.
“This is an experimental way to talk to ChatGPT, so availability and limits may change,” a spokeswoman told The Independent.
“For a fuller experience with more tools, higher limits, and more personalisation, existing users should continue using ChatGPT directly through their accounts.”
The launch places ChatGPT directly against WhatsApp owner Meta’s own artificial intelligence, Meta AI, which the tech titan has been rolling out across its suite of apps.
The approach is simple: send a message to the ChatGPT WhatsApp number, and you’ll be connected to the chatbot. Once connected, you can ask questions, seek assistance, or engage in more casual talks about hobbies, interests, or whatever comes to mind.
This new feature not only increases the accessibility of AI technology, but also improves how people interact with it, making it a vital tool for anyone wishing to learn, get answers, or simply engage in a conversation. Whether you’re new to ChatGPT or a long-time user, having it on WhatsApp allows you to effortlessly integrate AI into your daily life with no additional difficulty. It’s a step toward making AI more accessible and user-friendly to everyone.
Also, ChatGPT will never initiate a call or start a WhatsApp chat with you. To start a chat, users can call the number or send a message using WhatsApp. Standard carrier fees may apply, depending on your service package.
Furthermore, ChatGPT cannot be integrated into WhatsApp group chats. To gain access to advanced services such as image uploads, ChatGPT search, or tailored interactions, you must first join up or log into a ChatGPT account using the iOS or Android app, or online at chatgpt.com.
While ChatGPT’s launch on WhatsApp provides ease and simple access to the AI chatbot for text discussions, it also has some limits. However, having ChatGPT on WhatsApp provides a simple way to get rapid answers and engage in meaningful conversations, making it a useful tool for many people.
Users can also start a discussion immediately in WhatsApp by scanning the QR code.
