OpenAI Launches Free o3-Mini Reasoning Model on ChatGPT

The newest member of OpenAI’s o family of reasoning models, o3-mini, was introduced on Friday. The o3-mini is on schedule today, as OpenAI CEO Sam Altman said two weeks ago that it would arrive in “a couple of weeks.” For the first time, OpenAI is making a version of its most recent o3-mini reasoning model with rate limitations available to ChatGPT’s free customers. This model will be integrated into ChatGPT and its API services.

The model was initially shown out by OpenAI in December along with a more powerful system known as o3. However, the introduction coincides with a critical juncture for the organization, whose goals and difficulties appear to be expanding daily.

O3-mini, which was first shown as part of OpenAI’s 12 days of “ship-mas” in December, is intended to outperform the current reasoning model while matching o1’s performance in science, math, and coding. According to OpenAI, o3-mini ought to react 24% quicker than o1-mini while also producing more precise responses. Similar to o1-mini, this most recent model will not only provide a response but also demonstrate how it arrived at it.

Early benchmarks from OpenAI showed that their o3 model outperformed o1 in December. The company now claims that the o3-mini version will outperform o1 in a variety of coding and reasoning tasks with lower latency and expense. Through OpenAI’s API offerings, such as the Chat Completions API, Assistants API, and Batch API, developers will be able to make use of o3-mini.

Additionally, o3-mini-high—which OpenAI claims will be the “best coding option in ChatGPT”—and higher intelligence responses—which take a bit longer to generate—are available to paid customers. Additionally, O3-mini will use search to locate answers along with links to online resources.

Additionally, this is the first time that ChatGPT’s free users will have the opportunity to test out OpenAI’s reasoning models. This comes days after DeepSeek upended the AI industry and Microsoft made o1 free for all Copilot users. By choosing the Reason option in the chat bar, you may test o3-mini in ChatGPT for free. The rate limitations will be comparable to the current GPT-4o restrictions. OpenAI is raising its message restrictions for Plus and Teams customers to 150 messages per day, and o3-mini will also be accessible to ChatGPT Plus, Team, and Pro users globally today. O3-mini will only be available to Pro customers who are prepared to spend $200 per month.

OpenAI is fighting the idea that it is losing momentum to Chinese firms like DeepSeek in the AI competition, which it claims may have stolen its intellectual property. As it simultaneously pursues an ambitious data center project and purportedly builds the foundation for one of the largest investment rounds in history, it has been attempting to strengthen its ties with Washington.

According to Microsoft, o3-mini is also accessible through GitHub models, GitHub Copilot, and Microsoft Azure OpenAI Service.

This leads to o3-mini. OpenAI is promoting its new approach as “affordable” and “powerful.”

“The launch represents a significant step in expanding access to cutting-edge AI in support of our mission,” an OpenAI representative told TechCrunch.

Reasoning models such as o3-mini extensively fact-check themselves before delivering findings, in contrast to the majority of big language models. By doing this, they are able to steer clear of some of the common mistakes that models make. In fields like physics, these reasoning models tend to be more dependable, while not flawless, at the expense of taking a bit longer to reach conclusions.

O3-mini is optimized for STEM challenges, particularly those involving science, math, and programming. According to OpenAI, the model’s capabilities are somewhat comparable to those of the o1 family, which includes the o1 and o1-mini, although it operates more quickly and is less expensive.

External testers, according to the business, more than half the time favoured O3-mini’s responses over O1-mini’s. In comparison to O1-mini, O3-mini reportedly made 39% fewer “major mistakes” on “tough real-world questions” in A/B tests and generated “clearer” responses while responding around 24% quicker.

Starting on Friday, all users will be able to access O3-mini through ChatGPT; however, customers who purchase OpenAI’s ChatGPT Plus and Team subscriptions will be subject to a higher rate restriction of 150 inquiries per day. Unlimited access will be available to ChatGPT Pro users, and in a week, O3-mini will be available to ChatGPT Enterprise and ChatGPT Edu clients. (ChatGPT Gov has not yet been updated).

The ChatGPT drop-down menu allows users with premium plans to choose o3-mini. ChatGPT can “re-generate” a response for free users, or they can tap or click the new “Reason” button in the chat bar.

Selected developers will also get access to o3-mini through OpenAI’s API starting on Friday, albeit at first it won’t be able to analyse photographs. Depending on their use case and latency requirements, developers may choose between three different levels of “reasoning effort” to have o3-mini “think harder.”

With one million tokens being equivalent to about 750,000 words, O3-mini costs $0.55 per million cached input tokens and $4.40 per million output tokens. That is competitive with DeepSeek’s R1 reasoning model cost and 63% less expensive than o1-mini. For R1 access via its API, DeepSeek costs $0.14 per million cached input tokens and $2.19 per million output tokens.

OpenAI claims that ChatGPT’s medium reasoning effort setting for o3-mini offers “a balanced trade-off between speed and accuracy.” In the model selector, paid customers will be able to choose “o3-mini-high,” which would provide what OpenAI refers to as “higher intelligence” in return for slower replies.

The model will utilize search to discover current responses with connections to pertinent online sources, regardless of the version of o3-mini ChatGPT users select. As it attempts to include search into all of its reasoning models, OpenAI warns that the feature is only a “prototype.”

OpenAI stated in a blog post on Friday that “o3-mini offers a specialized alternative for technical domains requiring precision and speed, while o1 remains our broader general-knowledge reasoning model.” “OpenAI’s mission to push the boundaries of cost-effective intelligence continues with the release of o3-mini.”
