Non-Tesla EVs Can Use Tesla Superchargers In More Countries In Europe

Tesla Superchargers are now available in more countries for non-Tesla EVs | Fleet Europe

Tesla is set to deliver value to not just owners of Tesla electric vehicles (EV) in Europe but also to owners of non-Tesla EVs. In a tweet, the company announces the plan to expand its Supercharger pilot program. Owners of non-Tesla EVs can now take advantage of the company’s extensive charging network. Before now, the pilot phase of the program was in selected stations in the Netherlands, Norway, and France. Today the EV company is now extending charge service to non-Tesla owners via the Tesla app at select Superchargers within Sweden, Belgium, Austria, Spain, and the UK.

Initially in Belgium and Germany, non-Tesla owners had access to Tesla’s charging network only while traveling to a country that had the open Superchargers. Now that Belgium has been added to the program, German residents remain the only oddity that can access the charging network outside its borders but not domestically.

The report disclosed that last year, Elon Musk mentioned extending the Supercharger program to the US but no specifics on how it will be implemented were discussed. This was however due to the prominence of Tesla’s proprietary chart port used in North America. In an interview last week, Musk disclosed the company plans to add standardized connectors for other EVs to US Supercharger stations.

Reports have currently identified that Tesla models and Superchargers in North America don’t make use of the CCS2 standard that’s largely supported and used by all EVs in Europe, relying instead on Tesla’s proprietary charging plug. According to The Verge, other North American EVs are mostly equipped with a CCS1 connector, and EVs like the Nissan Leaf complicate things further by relying on the CHAdeMO standard. European charging standards make it easier to expand charging support there than in the US.

For EV owners living in one of the pilot countries or the other, find participating stations in the Tesla Supercharger network by using the Tesla app. Whether using a Tesla EV or another EV, you can monitor Supercharging for both vehicles in the app. For non-Tesla vehicles, additional fees different from electricity rates shared in the Tesla app might incur.
