This year has seen ceaseless cases of harassments and brutality of bloggers and journalist. Most recent is the case of Danjuma Katsina.
Danjuma Katsina, a journalist was allegedly detained over critical comments on a newly elected member of Nigeria’s House of Representatives from the state, Mansur Mashi.
A complaint was filed by the newly elected member which led to the invitation of the journalist at 8pm on Saturday. What was supposed to end in a questioning turned out to end in detention.
Sahara reporters gathered that “Mr.Katsina had posted a comment on Facebook in which he analyzed the outcome of the Mashi/Dutsi bye-election conducted in May, wondering why Mr.Mashi was allowed to contest the polls despite facing court action on alleged corruption”.
Despite the efforts of the Katsina state branch of the Nigerian Union of Journalists and officials of the Nigerian Guild of Editors to secure his release, Mr. Katsina was detained over night.
However, DSP Gambo Isah, the sate police command PRO denied the journalist’s detention, stressing that he was only invited for questioning.
