New Security Capabilities For At-Risk Apple Users

Apple is previewing a cutting-edge security capability that will offer additional protection to users who may be vulnerable to cyberattacks from private companies developing state-sponsored mercenary spyware. It will also be sharing information regarding how its $10 million grant for research revealing these threats will be employed. The new capability, called Lockdown Mode, will be available in the fall for iPadOS 16, iOS 16, and macOS Ventura. It is meant for a select number of users who are prone to threats to their digital safety. The technology will protect users against highly sophisticated attacks.

When Will iPadOS 16 and iOS 16 Be Released?

Apple has confirmed that iPadOS 16 and iOS 16 will be arriving in the fall. iPadOS 16 will be compatible with 19 different iPad models. Essentially, if your iPad currently runs on iPadOS 15, you will most probably be able to use the upgrade. Major features to look forward to in iOS 16 include improved dictation, Edit and Undo Send in Messages, Schedule and Undo send in Mail, and Live Text to capture text from videos. It will also have a new feature called Handoff in FaceTime, which will enable you to move calls without a hitch between your phone, tablet, and Mac.

The macOS Ventura Is Also Coming this Fall

Apple’s next-generation Mac operating system will also be launched in September or October this year. Features will include a Stage Manager for organizing windows and apps, updated to Safari and Mail, and Undo Send/Edit/Mark as Unread in Messages, and more. Stage Manager is a handy way to enable users to stay on task. It places the main app at the center of the desktop and tucks other apps away to the side, so they can easily be accessed when required. The new device will also have a Continuity Camera that allows users’ iPhones to function as a webcam for their Mac. There will also be a SharePlay function that allows users to watch TV shows and/or use apps alongside their friends while chatting with them. These new technologies can easily be attained via Mac tutorials that explain how users can make the most of their devices in a quick and concise manner.

Key Lockdown Features

Lockdown will have many handy security precautions, such as messages that block most attachment types (except images). Features like link previews will be disabled, Apple reports. Some sophisticated web technologies, like just-in-time (JIT) JavaScript compilation will be disabled unless the user selects to enable them. Incoming invitations, FaceTime calls, and service requests will all be blocked if the user has not previously called or sent a request to the person or organization. Wired connections with devices with computers or accessories will be blocked when the iPhone is locked, and there will also be limitations on the installation of configuration profiles. The latter will not be installable, nor will be device be able to enroll into mobile device management while the Lockdown feature is turned on.

Apple will soon be offering additional protection to users who may be at a high risk of sophisticated cyberattacks from private companies developing state-sponsored mercenary spyware. Called Lockdown Mode, this protection will be available with iPadOS 16, iOS 16, and macOS Ventura. The latter will all be available in the fall and promise many new user-friendly features that once again raise the bar for mobile devices.
