Netflix will now allow users to use a new feature that allows them download shows to watch offline later. The download feature is available for phones and tablets on Android 4.4.2 upwards and iOS 8 upwards.
Keep in mind though that the feature is available on shows owned by Netflix like Stranger Things, The Crown, Narcos, Orange is the New Black, and House of Cards. Once you have updated your Netflix app to the latest version, you should be able to see the download button next to the play button. The company says you can select the download video quality that best fits your needs. Standard quality is a slightly lower video quality that requires less storage space and takes less time to download. Higher quality requires more storage space and takes more time to download.
- From the Netflix app, tap the Menu icon .
- Scroll down and tap App Settings.
- Under the Downloads heading, tap Video Quality.
- Select either Standard or Higher video quality.
That said, you still require internet connection to download those shows with the difference this time being that you can now take these shows along with you when next you’re on that long flight and don’t want to watch the movies the airline has provided.
This also means that as Netflix continues to make itself the streaming platform of choice in African countries, this feature could make it easier for Africans who don’t have access to fast and affordable data to still subscribe and watch shows without internet connection. Well there are those who have access to the internet at certain places at certain times of the day, maybe they can also now use this to download shows and watch offline at a later time.
In the third quarter of 2016, Netflix added 3.2 million new subscribers internationally and another 370,000 in the United States. They had expected 304,000 new subscribers in the US and another 2 million international subscribers and while that may be, they expect a better fourth quarter as it announces more exclusive shows going into 2017.
