MTN Group has reportedly unveiled plans to launch a satellite internet service aimed at connecting remote communities to the digital world and rivalling Elon Musk’s brand of satellite internet broadband. This ambitious initiative seeks to bridge the digital divide, fostering economic growth, social development, and innovation in underserved regions.
Despite significant progress in expanding mobile network coverage, many remote communities remain disconnected from the digital ecosystem regardless of geographical location.
The telecom group proposed satellite internet solution addresses this challenge, leveraging cutting-edge technology to provide high-speed internet access and affordable services, promote digital inclusion, provide robust, low-latency connections, and support diverse applications as Africa’s leading telecom service provider.
MTN Group CEO Ralph Mupita confirmed the group’s plans for satellite-internet rollout which represents a groundbreaking effort to connect remote communities, driving socio-economic growth and digital inclusion. While challenges persist, this innovation can potentially transform lives, businesses, and communities.
“We are exploring several and some of them we’re happy to be resellers through our enterprise business to some of our customers in specific countries,” Mupita said. “To keep customers and businesses connected at all times, we’re going to have to embrace satellite as an additional technology form.”
Africa’s vast geography and challenging terrain make it difficult and expensive to deploy traditional terrestrial infrastructure like fibre and mobile towers in rural and remote areas. On the other hand satellite internet offers a solution to bridge this digital divide, providing connectivity to millions of people who are currently underserved which explains how Starlink rapidly penetrates the continent.
MTN’s competitors, such as Vodacom Safaricom, and Cell C, are also exploring satellite internet partnerships. By launching its satellite internet service, MTN aims to maintain its competitive edge and offer a comprehensive suite of connectivity solutions to its customers.
For context, MTN’s terrestrial networks can experience congestion during peak usage times, especially in urban areas. Satellite internet can act as a complementary solution, offloading some of the traffic and improving overall network performance.
“We’re very aware of the challenges of having to compete as a fixed and wireless operator with LEO satellites over time, so we’re arranging ourselves to be able to sure-proof our businesses in our key markets,” Mupita said.
The telecom group is focused on improving connectivity and driving economic growth by enabling businesses to operate more efficiently, facilitating remote work and education, and attracting foreign investment.
Techbooky suggests collaborating with established satellite providers like SpaceX’s Starlink can provide MTN with access to advanced technology, infrastructure, and operational expertise. However, Partnering can reduce costs and risks associated with launching and maintaining a satellite network.
MTN Group should be ready to face the regulatory system advocating for policies that support satellite internet deployment that can create a conducive environment for innovation and growth. It is worth noting that working closely with regulatory authorities to understand and comply with relevant regulations is essential for a smooth rollout which takes regulatory scolds off its operations.
MTN Group’s decision to launch satellite internet aligns with its broader vision of connecting Africa and empowering its people. MTN aims to accelerate digital inclusion and drive economic development across the continent by leveraging this innovative technology.
