MTN and Meta Collaborate on WhatsApp Call Quality in Nigeria and Beyond

MTN Group, Africa’s largest telecom provider, has partnered with tech giant Meta to enhance the quality and dependability of real-time audio and video conversations on apps like WhatsApp in 12 MTN markets, beginning in Nigeria.

Through the use of application-aware networks and network-aware apps, the program aims to improve the communication between mobile phone networks and real-time calling applications.

In Africa, where telecom operators frequently lament that OTT firms like Meta are eroding their voice call revenue as more subscribers switch to internet calls rather than traditional calls on their networks, the partnership represents a dramatic change in the connection between telecom operators and Over-the-Top (OTT) players.

In a statement, MTN revealed that the partnership with Meta began at the Mobile World Congress (MWC) 2024. Following that, technical teams from both organizations began closely collaborating to pinpoint areas that needed improvement, utilizing sophisticated data analytics and thorough testing to implement optimized solutions.

The business claims that these actions are now starting to result in quantifiable gains in network efficiency and call performance.

“We’re pleased with the significant advancement in our real-time communication services, showcasing our commitment to creative customer solutions,” stated Yahaya Ibrahim, Chief Technical Officer of MTN Nigeria, in response to the effort.

Diego Marí, Head of Network Ecosystems Engineering at Meta, concurred, saying:

“The partnership demonstrates our commitment to improving service quality and user experience while aiming for ongoing efficiency in traffic delivery and enables us to implement cutting-edge solutions for an unmatched real-time experience in Nigeria.”

Both businesses are dedicated to growing the project for long-term benefit, and the expanded cooperation will expand to 11 more MTN areas in the upcoming months.

This initiative is in line with MTN’s overarching goal of spearheading digital solutions for Africa’s advancement and represents a critical step in enhancing digital connection and service delivery throughout the continent.

Prior to this, telecom providers, particularly in Nigeria, had been grumbling about the way Over-the-Top (OTT) apps like Messenger and WhatsApp operated.

The justification had been that telecom users were no longer making regular phone calls on the networks as they adopted OTT calls, resulting in a loss of voice income.

However, the telcos in the recent past have observed a spike in their data income, a trend that demonstrates that they are now gaining from the surge in the usage of platforms like WhatsApp for voice and video conversations.

As users use more data, MTN Nigeria’s data income has surpassed its voice revenue; hence, the company’s data revenue development trajectory would be strengthened by the relationship with Meta.

Nigeria has been selected to implement the new improvements first. According to preliminary findings, key performance indicators (KPIs) have significantly improved by 50%, suggesting that MTN Nigeria customers’ call quality has significantly improved. This is a significant step in MTN’s long-term plan to offer cutting-edge phone, data, and video service solutions and extend digital services throughout its markets.

“This rollout demonstrates our dedication to providing cutting-edge digital experiences that meet our customers’ changing needs,” MTN Nigeria said in a statement. “Our goal is to give our users the most cutting-edge, dependable, and superior communication services possible.”

Given that more individuals are using WhatsApp for both personal and professional communication, it is anticipated that the improved audio and video call quality would increase user happiness and engagement. This effort not only enhances the user experience for current MTN customers, but it also supports MTN’s overarching objective of promoting digital inclusion and building smarter networks that enable both consumers and enterprises.

Future upgrades are anticipated to broaden the quality enhancements and increase the partnership’s influence in other areas as MTN and Meta continue to improve the technology.
