Meta is Developing Its Own AI-Powered Search Engine

To lessen its need on Google and Microsoft’s Bing, two of the biggest search engines in the market, Facebook parent company Meta is apparently considering developing its own AI-powered search engine. The new search engine will produce conversational AI-generated summaries of recent news, current affairs and current events and also provide them to users via Meta’s AI chatbot. Meta was thought to have begun developing a search engine to rival Google years ago with its graph search concept that many thought would graduate into a full blown search engine but that didn’t happen.

Businesses are not slowing down in their development of AI technology; instead, they are continuously improving their platforms and features. Microsoft and Google have taken a very assertive stance. According to reports, Meta is now developing its own AI-powered search engine that uses the Meta AI chatbot to deliver search summaries of recent occurrences. Since Meta’s chatbot now uses Google and Bing for customer questions pertaining to sports, stocks, or the news, this represents the company’s step towards lessening its dependency on Google and Microsoft.

The insider claims that over the past eight months, a specialised technical team at Meta has been constructing a database of pertinent data for the new search engine.

To respond to queries about current events and news, the Meta AI bot integrated into Facebook and Instagram now uses Microsoft Bing and Google, whose parent company, Alphabet, is scheduled to release quarterly earnings tomorrow.

Given that Meta’s web crawler was discovered browsing the internet months ago, that may alter in the future. According to the information’s source, a group has been constructing a database of data for its chatbot for around eight months. Last month, Bloomberg reported that Apple’s work on search capabilities in the App Store demonstrated how it “has what it needs” for its own AI-powered Google Search alternative. Meta has been working to provide location data that may compete with Google Maps.

Instagram and Facebook have incorporated Meta’s AI chatbot, which uses Google and Microsoft to respond to user inquiries on current affairs. The business is currently taking steps to lessen its reliance on outside search engines by developing its own AI-powered search engine. This change would realize Meta’s larger goal of having an internal AI search engine that provides users with comprehensive answers to news inquiries in a more efficient manner.

Meta said last week that it has reached a multi-year agreement with Reuters, enabling its chatbot to respond with news stories from the publication. The Verge requested feedback from Meta but did not receive a response right away.

Further information about web crawlers that have been scouring the web in recent months is also provided by the source. Additionally, the team at Meta has been working diligently for the past eight months to build a comprehensive database that will enable the AI chatbot to handle real-time queries and responses.

In addition, Meta has been collecting location data that might help it eventually compete with Google Maps. Since a Bloomberg article previously indicated that Apple intended to lessen its reliance on Google by creating a product that was comparable to its competitor, the company has been aggressively building its own AI-powered search engine.

Meanwhile, OpenAI has confirmed development of its SearchGPT AI search engine. In related news, News Corp. is pursuing legal action against Perplexity’s AI search engine, with The New York Times and other publishers threatening similar lawsuits.
