LinkedIn acquires Newsle, a Google Alerts-style service for you and your network

LinkedIn’s has announced it has acquired Newsle, a service that lets you import your contacts from Facebook or LinkedIn and scans the Web to alerts you whether anyone in your network has been mentioned on the Web.

The good news for current Newsle users is that it’s not being shuttered, and will continue to operate as a standalone service. Instead, Newsle will be integrated more deeply into LinkedIn’s existing products, as it continues its push to make online relationships more meaningful.

“LinkedIn and Newsle share a common goal: We both want to provide professional insights that make you better at what you do,” the LinkedIn statement says. “For example, knowing more about the people in your network – like when they’re mentioned in the news – can surface relevant insights that help you hit your next meeting with them out of the park.”

Last year, LinkedIn acquired Pulse, a news-reader app similar to Flipboard. Today’s move is consistent with LinkedIn’s push towards becoming a tool as much about publishing as it is about networking.
