Google’s hardware team has got users looking forward to something, especially with its planned entry into the smartwatch market this year. Rumours about Google’s Pixel Watch have been making rounds for years now, and finally, it seems like pieces for the project are finally taking shape. With Google’s acquisition of Fitbit over a year ago, preparations are all set for the launch of its own smartwatch line at the Google I/O event scheduled for May 2022. However, ahead of this official launch, vital details and designs of the new Pixel smartwatch have leaked online.
According to reports that Google’s smartwatch it’s called the Pixel Watch, the new wearable from Google is said to have been built around the new Wear OS platform by Google. The Pixel Watch aims to do one thing, and that gives the best wearables experience on Android.
According to a leak by 91Mobiles, the Pixel Watch is packed with several key integrations from Fitbit – a company that has long pioneered the drive for smart wearables. Leaks of the design of the new Pixel smartwatch have shown that Google is displaying these integrations rather prominently. Other details along with the leak are that the watch will come with the latest version of the Wear OS, which is the unannounced version called the Wear OS 3.1.
The circular face of the smartwatch is said to most likely come with a bezel-less design. This Is only possible because Google settled for a curved display that tapers into the body of the watch at the edges. The Pixel Watch will also feature a rotary crown that doubles up as a button by the side. Just a close similarity to the Apple Watch. The functionalities of the button and if it can be remapped or not are yet to be discovered.
Google’s entry into the smartwatch industry became obvious months after its acquisition of Fitbit in 2021 for about $2.1 Billion. Despite its acquisition, the partnership between Google and the Fitbit brand has continued to yield tremendous results, especially with the plans to launch newer smartwatch models that will be powered by the new Wear OS. Wear OS 3 debuted alongside the Galaxy Watch 4 in the year 2021. However, there has been no update on the smartwatch lineup. But the Wear OS we have been seeing has had Samsung skin.
While the discussions for acquisition were ongoing, Google’s vice president of devices, Rick Osterloh put out a statement “We’re confident the combination of Fitbit’s leading technology, product expertise, and health and wellness innovation with the best of Google’s AI, software, and hardware will drive more competition in wearables and make the next generation of devices better and more affordable.” Apart from the launch of the Pixel Watch that’s in anticipation, the low-cost Pixel 6a will also be launching. The Pixel 6a is said to be powered by the same Tensor processor that is the Pixel 6 -Google’s current flagship device.
Google is doing something remarkable no doubt, but a lot of tech enthusiasts have questions yawning for answers. Questions like “Will the Pixel Watch primarily focus on fitness and wellness or will it also incorporate more smart features like LTE connectivity? Is this going to work equally well with all Android phones or will it prioritize Google’s own Pixel ecosystem only?” just like the Switch To Android App recently that’s only compatible with Pixel devices for now. We are looking forward to having Google reveal the Pixel Watch at next month’s I/O developers’ conference, maybe then a lot of these questions will find soothing answers.
