Music magnate Jay-Z and Twitter’s Jack Dorsey have launched an educational program advocating for the democratic vision that “education is power” and they are calling it “The Bitcoin Academy.” The recent development follows more than a year after the duo partnered to launch an endowment fund to fast-track Bitcoin in Africa and India. The project is called ₿trust and was launched with an injection of 500 Bitcoin which as of the time of the announcement was worth $23.6 million.

The Bitcoin Academy participants are residents of the Marcy Houses, the public housing complex in Brooklyn, New York where Jay-Z grew up. The program is completely free and aimed at developing financial literacy, by increasing access to financial information and promoting inclusive opportunities. As of this time, there are hardly enough specifics that can describe the details of the project but the program and its areas of focus are expected to surround the necessity, use, and vision for Bitcoin. It is also expected that prospective students leave the program with general financial knowledge. The program will take place both online and offline.

Lamar Wilson of the Black Bitcoin Billionaire and Najah J. Roberts of the Crypto Blockchain Plug will be instructing the program. Children between the ages of 5 and 17 are free to participate in the program and are encouraged to join the “Crypto Kids Camp.”

Adult participants will be given a portable WiFi, a smartphone if they require one, and a one-year limited data plan. According to Jack Dorsey, the goal of the project is “to prove that making powerful tools more available to people enables them to build greater independence.” He also added that the program will go beyond a focus on Bitcoin and will touch on conversations that surround “long-term thinking, local economies, and self-confidence.”

A tweet shared by Jack Dorsey explained how important The Bitcoin Academy is to him. The tweet read “Education is where we start. This isn’t just about bitcoin…it’s about long-term thinking, local economies, and self-confidence. Courses are free to all Marcy residents, including kids. And to make it even easier we’re providing devices and data plans for all who need it.”

“Bitcoin is becoming a critical tool for many in Africa and Central and South America. We believe the same potential exists within communities in the US. Our goal is to prove that making powerful tools more available to people enables them to build greater independence.”

Jack Dorsey is known to be an advocate of Bitcoin and blockchain technology. Last December, Jack Dorsey-owned Square changed its name to Block, explaining that it is expanding its business beyond its original credit card-reader business to focus on technologies such as blockchain.
