How Good Domain Name Can Impact SEO

When creating a new website, selecting the right domain name is one of the most important decisions to make. And while keywords and the domain name itself were quite important for achieving positive SEO results for many years, this has slightly changed in recent history. Today, there are a number of different factors that could potentially affect the efficiency of SEO, with domain names only being one aspect of a much larger and more intricate strategy. To that end, here are some ways domain names can impact SEO, as well as advice on how to choose more SEO-friendly domains:

SEOBranding efforts

As domain names are unique, one of a kind, they can be used for building a brand. A brand name as a domain name enables users to know exactly what to expect, leading to longer retention times and lower bounce rates. Not only will this aid in improving SEO efforts, but it can also directly represent a company. With this form of branding, a business can strengthen its corporate identity, gain better brand recognition, and potentially attract more visitors, all of which could improve a website’s rankings in search engage results pages as well.

Relevant keywords

When users search for specific products or services, the domain names that contain that specific keyword might have a competitive advantage. For instance, if you use bestfootwear.com, your website might rank more highly compared to branded or other domains when users search for footwear. However, it’s important to note that a keyword in the domain name alone won’t be enough for SEO. A website also needs to offer quality, relevant content injected with organic keywords in order to positively impact the click-through rate (CTR), as Google tends to prioritize real value.

Top-level domains for better SEO

Top-level domains (TLDs) are the most popular and well-known domains, including extensions such as .com and .org. Due to their age and already established nature, they are still ranked quite highly by search engines, and remain a great choice when aiming for global reach. But not all TLDs are created equal. Some top-level extensions still serve unique purposes, and should only be used for specific institutions in order to avoid potential issues in the future, particularly when it comes to .edu, .gov, and .mil domains that are assigned to educational, government, and military institutions, respectively.

Personal domains

Another great option would be to choose an effective personal domain name such as .me, which might be especially beneficial for personal brands and websites. This is a safe and trusted domain that is ranked highly by Google and treated the same as traditional top-level domains. Apart from being SEO-friendly, this extension also represents a great call to action that directly appeals to visitors and consumers. Above all, the personal meaning of such a domain name makes it incredibly efficient at connecting with audiences on a deeper level.

Location-based domains

For businesses operating regionally, country-specific TLDs such as .co.uk (UK) or .au (Australia) are another good option. They are treated the same way as conventional TLDs and will rank quite highly in search engine results. However, it’s worth mentioning that these domain names can only reach the top position of results pages in their respective areas, as the chances of them positioning highly on a global scale are quite slim. For that reason, only regional brands should consider using these domain extensions, to improve their SEO efforts in local areas.

Business-related factors

Apart from the location, there are also a number of domain name options available for those who wish to put their business and services in the focus. For example, .store can be great for e-commerce websites, .tech is ideal for technology-related companies, while .design can be good for graphic and web designers. While TLDs might still have an advantage over business-specific domains, they are a suitable alternative for brands whose preferred domain names aren’t available. They might potentially aid in SEO efforts as well, due to their descriptive nature and call to action.

Domain age and owner

Another aspect that could impact SEO is whether a domain owner has a good record on Google, as a reputation of penalized and spam domains in the past tend to follow an owner to future registrations as well. To tackle this issue, simply making all public domain information available might be enough. The age of the domain could also influence SEO efforts. Older, more established domains that have been offering value for a long time are often considered to be trustworthy, and will rank more highly as a result. Of course, this doesn’t mean new domains will instantly lose good positions, as high-quality content is always a deciding factor.

Selecting the right domain name is crucial for improving SEO efforts. Above all, a short, memorable, and recognizable domain name with thematic relevance is key to long-term success.
