Grand Theft Auto is an action-adventure video game developed by DMA Design and published by BMG Interactive. It was first released in October 1997 for MS-DOS and Microsoft Windows, in December 1997 for the PlayStation and in October 1999 for the Game Boy Colour. The game follows the narrative of a criminal in the underworld of fictional cities inspired by real-life locations. The gameplay is presented in a way in which the player is required to perform missions, to progress through levels.
As one of the most biggest gaming franchises in the world with a gameplay that revolves around driving and shooting, with occasional role-playing and stealth elements. The series has been critically acclaimed and commercially successful. According to Statista, the Grand Theft Auto franchise has managed to ship more than 345 million units worldwide. With an estimated gross revenue of over $9 billion, making it the fourth-highest selling video game franchise of all time.
The next instalment of the GTA franchise, reported to be much anticipated is rumoured to feature an in-game cryptocurrency. This rumour was brought to light according to a tweet on June 3, by Tom Henderson- a video game insider who had successfully leaked accurate information about other games such as Call of Duty and Battlefield in time past. Tom stated “I heard recently that in GTA 6, some missions will reward you in Bitcoin instead of cash for completing some missions. The stock market feature will return, with the addition of a broker for different cryptocurrencies. If GTA 6 incorporates this right, it’s huge for crypto.”
There have been so much rumours regarding the GTA series in the past as such it is difficult to confirm how accurate this may seem. However this rumour does seem likely believable, as the GTA series have taken opportunities to feature real-world events and trends in time past. Henderson also clarified that the final name of the cryptocurrency might not be Bitcoin, but that he was confident that it would be present in the game. The appearance of a “GTA bitcoin” or another fictional cryptocurrency could raise popular awareness of the real-world crypto space. As important as this appearance might be, it would not be the first time Bitcoin has been featured in popular culture(Bitcoin.com).
Grand Theft Auto, remains the ultimate way to lead a life of crime that won’t get you nicked in real life. With the inclusion of a fictional cryptocurrrency like Bitcoin this would go a long way to help steer the public’s perception of cryptocurrency. As players can earn payments from big shot contractors who want to remain anonymous for certain tasks and missions. However as good as this may seem and push for the mainstream culture, players can only earn but can’t spend the cryptocurrency earned in the game to buy real-world items, the Bitcoin payments would not be actual cryptocurrency.
Bitcoin is a decentralized digital currency, without a central bank or single administrator that can be sent from user to user on the peer-to-peer bitcoin network without the need for intermediaries. The currency began use in 2009 and has since come to stay. Find out more about cryptocurrency here
