Google Launches AI-Powered Feature for Gmail “Most Relevant”

Google’s optional AI-powered update to Gmail’s search feature aims to increase the likelihood that you will discover the email you’re looking for.

On Thursday, Google started implementing a new feature for Gmail that would make it simpler for users to locate pertinent emails. This new search result sorting tool, called “Most Relevant,” does away with the conventional chronological order and utilizes artificial intelligence (AI) to push emails that may be more significant than others to the front. Alongside the current filter choices that allow users to refine the search results, this additional capability will be accessible. Notably, Gmail just got a new Gemini feature that uses email data to automatically generate calendar events.

Google announced the new feature’s rollout in a blog post. All users of personal Gmail accounts will be able to access this through the web and the iOS and Android applications. The business hopes to provide the capability to Business accounts in the future.

Gmail search results now take into account factors like recency, most-clicked emails, and frequent contacts in addition to keywords, rather than only displaying emails in chronological order. This change increases the likelihood that the emails you’re looking for will appear at the top of your search results, saving you time and making it easier to locate crucial information.

According to a post posted to Google’s The Keyword blog today, Google searches will now consider additional factors, such as “recency, most-clicked emails, and frequent contacts,” in addition to the keywords you’re searching for. This means that results will no longer only be returned in chronological order. “This update increases the likelihood that the emails you’re looking for will appear at the top of your search results, saving you time and making it easier for you to find important information.”

According to Google, the tool’s goal is to make it simpler to find a certain email, particularly in an overloaded inbox. Currently, users must enter keywords associated with the email in order to search for it. The mail client then displays results either chronologically or with the top result followed by others.

Users will now see a new dropdown menu on the search results page after conducting a keyword search. Either “Most Recent” or “Most Relevant” can be selected. The most recent will still display results in chronological order, but if consumers choose the latter, AI will take control and display the results somewhat differently.

Users worldwide who have personal Google accounts are now able to access Gmail using the new “most relevant” search results feature. This functionality will be accessible through web browsers or Google’s Gmail applications for iOS and Android. Google claims that the functionality won’t, however, take the place of Gmail’s prior method of email searching. Rather, you will have the ability to switch between the new “most relevant” option and chronological keyword results.

The business claims that this new mode takes into account things like recent contacts, most-clicked emails, and frequency. This implies that emails and senders with whom a user has had more interaction will rank higher than those with whom they have not. According to Google, this mode will probably save the user time and the bother of scrolling through hundreds of things by displaying the emails they are looking for at the top of the search results.

Interestingly, although the feature is AI-powered, it does not make use of generative AI models, unlike Gmail’s Gemini-based capabilities. This is more of a machine learning-powered ranking system that surfaces pertinent emails using a combination of behaviour analysis methods, NLP models, and AI-driven search algorithms.
