The Spotify app will be able to play and search for music on Google Gemini thanks to a new extension. On Android smartphones that are compatible, the Gemini artificial intelligence (AI) assistant will support the new capability. Users may use the AI-powered virtual assistant to request music by song, album, artist, playlist, and more by connecting their Spotify account to their Google account. However, a Spotify Premium membership will be needed to access some app-based features. According to 9to5Google, the extension, which was initially discovered in the Google app’s code in June, is now making its way to Android handsets that support it.
Google has revealed that five Gemini Extensions are starting to be released in recent weeks. The majority of users are still awaiting WhatsApp, Phone, Messages, and Utilities, while only Google Home has been widely available (via its Preview Program).
Spotify is the second third-party Gemini Extension after WhatsApp. The “play & search” feature is comparable to that of YouTube Music.

Google described the new Gemini app extension on its support page. Notably, six months after the tech giant announced an expansion to incorporate YouTube Music capabilities, the AI assistant now has the much-needed capacity. Notably, Gemini will utilize the most recent music service used if a customer has linked both Spotify and YouTube Music and does not indicate which app to use in their request.
The business emphasized that neither the iOS app nor the Gemini web app nor Google Messages support the Spotify addon. Additionally, it won’t function until the user has enabled Gemini Apps Activity and the Android Gemini app is set to English. Additionally, those who have a Spotify Premium membership will only be allowed to play particular tracks on the app.
Users may now ask the AI assistant to play a song, album, or playlist, as well as request music for a particular event or activity. They may also look for a playlist by genre, mood, or activity, or search for songs by the name and lyrics of an artist. But right now, Gemini is unable to make a Spotify radio or playlist.
According to Google’s extension support page, in order to use Gemini Apps, you must first link your Google and Spotify accounts. After that, you must activate Gemini Apps Activity, which has the capacity to save your AI searches for up to 72 hours. The Spotify extension only functions when Gemini’s language is set to English at startup, and it cannot be used within Google Messages, the Gemini web app, or the Gemini app for iOS.
Even though Google said it will send out the extension, it may take up to two weeks before all users worldwide can access it.
Following the October launch of WhatsApp compatibility, Spotify is the second non-Google app to get Gemini capabilities.
