Google Drive app for desktop (Mac and PC) is being killed off by Google and if you use G Suite, you should know this. But this is being replaced with what Google now calls Drive File Stream. The existing app will be shut down finally by March 12th 2018 even though you will start getting messages to migrate from October.

Drive File Stream

In a blog post, Google explained that

“With this launch, Google Drive for Mac/PC is officially deprecated. It will no longer be supported starting on December 11th, 2017, and it will shut down completely on March 12th, 2018. We encourage you to use Drive File Stream. As an alternative to or in addition to installing Drive File Stream, you can upgrade to the new version of Drive for Mac/PC, called Backup and Sync.”

Users should have started seeing the Drive File Stream setting in the Admin Console by now but will be able to start using it from September 26th. This is to give users ample time to get used to the new feature and especially for IT admins who manage this for organisation(s).

The new Drive File Stream is better for companies but if you’re a regular user, you can just use Google’s Backup and Sync tool that already available for download.
