Gmail For iOS Gets AI-Based Smart Notifications For High-Priority Emails

Gmail has dozens of new features to help users manage their inbox, thanks to new Google updates. The search-engine giants have improved Gmail services, creating a number of new tricks to tidy up your emails.

Google has simplified the basics of email management to make it easier to send and receive emails. The company announced an update to its Gmail app for iOS that lets users limit notifications to ‘high priority’ emails only. The new feature uses Gmail’s machine learning and artificial capabilities to identify emails you may want to read first.

Some people don’t get very much email each day, so things remain pretty manageable. However, if your inbox is regularly hammered all day long, especially by unimportant messages, the notifications it can produce are nothing short of infuriating. The Gmail team is building a very simple and obvious solution that will cut down on some of that notification spam.

“Notifications are only useful if you have time to read them—and if you’re being notified hundreds of times a day, chances are, you don’t. That’s why we’re introducing a feature that alerts you only when important emails land in your Gmail inbox, so you know when your attention is really required,” reads a Google blog post.  Gmail iOS app users need to select “High priority only” from the Notifications drop-down in the settings menu to enable the feature.

Last year, the same feature was introduced to Inbox  app, an app that categorise incoming email messages. Now, the iOS version of Gmail just received it, as well, so it’s safe to say that it will also arrive on Android in the same form. In short, Gmail’s current account settings only allow for turning notifications on or off, an all-or-nothing approach. Once this new feature launches, it will add a third option that will only produce notifications when an incoming message is deemed urgent.

Notably, Google revealed the development of its advanced feature alongside detailing the redesigned Gmail experience back in April. The company at that time also specified a shortcut to let users easily unsubscribe from unwanted newsletters using Gmail’s AI algorithms.

The update is available for some iOS users in the Gmail app. Although some iOS users may notice that the feature isn’t available to them, it should be rolling out to everyone in the next day or two or three days after.

The feature comes in handy especially when Gmail’s overload of push notifications from your social media accounts, forums, and even promotional alerts are becoming an annoyance to you.
