Gamr, a Nigerian startup has raised undisclosed seed funds for the purpose of expanding into a larger industry.
This round was facilitated by emPawa Africa – a label services company, Andrenaline gaming, a multi-gaming community, and other investors from the business and entertainment industry.
Gamr is bringing another angle of playing video games through its platform. It is an exchange-traded fund dedicated to video game technology, and the first competitive gaming startup there has been in the country – Nigeria.
Here’s how the platform works
Each video game player must subscribe to the platform. Every year, there is an annual digital tournament where over 4,000 gamers come together to play. Cash prizes are won by winners, and as at present, Gamr has given out cash prizes to African winners alone, the tune of hundreds of thousands of dollars. This is another method the platform uses to reward African gamers, as they have fun.
The platform is encouraging to join even though one may be a newbie as regards video games because, it leverages the power of artificial intelligence to train players.
When a person becomes a talented player, the platform does not close the door on them. Instead, they are trained to become gaming professionals, by gaining access to player analytics and getting groomed for a brighter future in gaming.
“Africa is the final frontier for esports and Gamr is realizing this opportunity… African gamers have embraced us. We’ve built our community to over 60,000 and have hosted tournaments featuring thousands f gamers from across Africa. We’ve also built strategic partnerships with stakeholders across the globe”. Says Sholakunmi Adenipebi, COO of Gamr. Adenipebi is excited about the new investment, and has assured its investors that the Company will only keep advancing, providing new opportunities for gamers, brands and tournament organisers.
Ayomide Adeware, head of Products and Label Services, emPawa Africa – one of Gamr’s partners, shares his thoughts on the gaming startup and the investment: “Gamr’s track record and vision for esports in Africa is intriguing, and we are proud to be supporting its growth. As we have seen in music, Africa offers a huge and engaged fanbase, and we’re excited about the potential for esports in Africa”.
