Ferrari Introduces 296 GTB V6-Hybrid Sport Car With 818HP

The new 296 GTB as the latest entry into its Berlinetta sports car family, with an all-new hybridised V6 engine, Ferrari’s first hybrid car in series-production. This is the 2022 296 GTB and from all point looks like it’s a stunner. The automobile company known for its prancing horse logo and red racing cars has promised its first full electric model in 2025. The 296 GTB is a clean-sheet design powertrain that’s unlike anything Ferrari has ever put on the road.

The new 296 GTB sports car is fitted with a 6-cylinder (V6) mid-rear turbo engine, the first for a Ferrari road car, although such engines dates as far back as the 1950s in Ferrari cars. The Ferrari road cars are normally powered by V8 or more powerful but also more polluting – V12 engines. However for the V6 engine, coupled with a 122 KW electric motor, can produce a massive 830 horse power for the new two-seater. Beyond its cylinder count, this engine as you already know is something quite different than what’s come before. Its 2.992-liter displacement and six cylinders give the car its name (296), and the wide, 120-degree vee design helps give the body its super sleek shape. The new GTB is about 2.5 inches shorter in length than the Tributo and nearly a full inch shorter in height. It is, however, some 310 pounds heavier, with a 3,241-pound dry weight versus the F8’s 2,932 pounds.

As Ferrari continue to drive into the new era of automobile electrification, the company earlier this month picked technology industry veteran Benedetto Vigna, as its new chief executive. Ferrari’s development strategy remains firmly anchored in manufacturing cutting-edge, high-end sports cars for an electric era, rather than repositioning itself as a pure luxury goods company. Ferrari Chief Marketing and Commercial officer Enrico Galliera said the 296 GTB created a new segment, “If the SF 90 was designed to reach the peak of performance, this has been designed for the peak of pleasure of driving,” he said in a web presentation. “We expect this will also help us attract clients who are not driving a Ferrari now.” This brand new two-seater is expected will cost about 269,000 euros ($321,000), reaching 302,000 euros for it “Assetto Fiorano” high-performance.

Ferrari and rivals also associated with powerful engines are wrestling with how to shift their line-ups to electrified propulsion without losing the extreme performance that supports their premium pricing. Rivals like Aston Martin and McLaren, are wrestling with how to shift their line-ups to battery power without losing the visceral performance. Lamborghini plan to shift its current models – the Huracan and Aventador sports cars and the Urus sport utility – to hybrid, gasoline-electric powertrains by the end of 2024. Porsche already offered a full-electric vehicle with its Taycan model.  With governments around the world proposing deadlines as early as 2030 for phasing out petroleum-fuelled internal combustion vehicles in order to hit climate goals, the automobile industry is on its toes for revolutionary inventions to comply. Galliera said “It’s a process which has started a couple of years ago, we’re working to cope with regulation and the task of reducing emissions”
