Facebook is taking the fight against fake news and spam to the way people post in the News Feed. The social media giant says it is tweaking its News Feed algorithm to now demote posts by users who post more than 50 times a day because it is likely they are sharing fake information or spam.

So users who post more than 50 times a day using the News Feed will get their posts to reach a lesser audience according to Facebook. In a blog post today, Facebook says there’s a strong possibility that people who post more than 50 times a day are likely to be spammers based on its research.

“Our research shows that there is a tiny group of people on Facebook who routinely share vast amounts of public posts per day, effectively spamming people’s feeds. Our research further shows that the links they share tend to include low quality content such as clickbait, sensationalism, and misinformation.”

The challenge with this new tweak In Facebook’s News Feed algorithm is that it could affect even reputable organisations which post many times in a day but Facebook is assuming based on its research that even reputable firms don’t post that much in a day.

Facebook News Feed algorithm tweaks are always significant because it could be the difference between reaching a wider audience and a smaller one. So Facebook tweaked its algorithm to favour personal posts to reach your friends over posts by Pages. A lot content publishers now rely on Facebook globally to reach out to a greater audience.
