Elon Musk’s Vision for X: Gaming, Shopping, and Video Galore

Elon Musk is really trying to turn the X formerly Twitter app into the everything app with features like job postings, payments and now game streaming coming to the social media platform. Game streaming has become popular with rival platforms like Facebook upping their game in this area. But it’s not just game streaming that could be coming to the platform, live shopping and others. Let’s take a look at them:

Game Streaming

X is venturing into the gaming world with a basic game streaming feature, reminiscent of Twitch. Currently, this feature is exclusively available to X Premium subscribers, who are in for a gaming treat. Musk recently unveiled this feature in a 54-minute Diablo IV stream under the mysterious Twitter handle @cyb3rgam3r420. After the stream, Musk confirmed that the company is indeed testing game streaming. Mark Kalman, an engineer at X, even shared a video tutorial on how Premium subscribers can set up game streaming via Open Broadcaster Software (OBS) linked to their Twitter accounts through X Media Studio.

As of now, the extent of X’s commitment to attracting streamers remains a mystery. While the feature allows viewer comments during streams, it lacks many creator-centric features seen on other platforms. Nevertheless, it reflects X’s drive to woo more users through creators and innovative video elements.

Live Shopping with Paris Hilton

In a unique partnership, X is teaming up with Paris Hilton to explore live shopping features. The heiress and entrepreneur will craft four original video content programs each year, integrating live-shopping elements. This venture adds an exciting layer to X’s evolving landscape, underlining its ambitions to become more than just a social media platform.

Infrastructure Challenges and Musk’s On-Air Mishaps

X’s transition to accommodate new live video features poses a noteworthy challenge – ensuring the platform’s infrastructure can handle the load. The company’s previous layoffs, which included site reliability engineers, have left it grappling with substantial live audio and video streams, especially those associated with Musk’s account. Musk’s livestream announcement with Florida Governor Ron DeSantis crashed due to infrastructure issues. Musk’s biographer, Walter Isaacson, explained that this stemmed from a poorly planned data centre relocation. However, these challenges persist. In a recent attempt to livestream his visit to the US-Mexico border, Musk’s video feed cut out, necessitating a frantic, company-wide email to get it back on track. Musk’s message was clear, “Please fix this.”

As Musk continues his ambitious journey to transform X into a multifaceted “everything app,” the challenges of bringing his vision to life persist, leaving us with an intriguing journey ahead.
